PREP

What a magnificent day the Prep students had celebrating 100 days of school.

They started their day with a special assembly where they showed off their projects and costumes.

They took part in a variety of activities across the course of the day. Students enjoyed being in different classrooms engaging in learning that focused on the number 100.

Preps were thrilled to turn up to school in their pyjamas and got a giggle out of seeing their teachers dressed in their pyjamas too. The excitement didn’t stop there.

On the same day, the Prep students were lucky enough to have the fire brigade visit them to remind them about what to do in case of an emergency.

Students learnt to ‘crawl down low and go, go go’; they learnt about finding a safe meeting spot outside their homes; and to call 000 and ask for the fire brigade.

Students had the opportunity to go inside the fire truck and even got to use the fire hose to squirt water.

It was a fun-filled and educational experience for everyone.

The Prep Team

Year 1

It’s week 6! The year one’s have explored many things in the last couple of weeks.  Here is a snapshot of all the great learning that has been happening in year one!

In writing, we have completed our narratives and are now looking at fiction and non-fiction. Students will be learning the difference between them by looking at the features and the structure of these texts. Students will even create their own non-fiction book.

Noah in 1D has sorted the difference between fiction and non-fiction as part of our seesaw task.

In humanities, we have been looking at natural and constructed features, their location and how they change. We have explored how the Yarra was formed as well as places we visit in our community.

Honoka and Zayn from 1D used coloured paper to create their Yarra River.

In play-based learning, we have had a strong focus on teamwork and this has been done through many different activities such as dress ups, working together to build a structure and playing UNO.

In Maths, we have been learning about subtraction and 3D objects. Students have looked at different subtraction strategies and features of 3D objects.

Leyla and Noah in 1D have shown us different ways to subtract through pictures and worded problems.

Grace and Edward in 1D found 3D objects around the room. They labelled the object and some of the features that the objects have.

We had our science incursion this week! The students were really excited watching and learning all about different chemical reactions. We extended this in class by creating our own science experiment with paper towels, water and food colouring. The students were really engaged as they watched what happened when the colours red, blue and yellow were mixed.

Year 2

We have surpassed halfway of not only the term, but of the year! It has truly flown by. There has been such amazing growth amongst our year 2’s!

This term in reading we continue to practise searching for the main idea in reading to support comprehension. We are also learning to read and spell words that are joined together to make special words called contractions – these are words such as: ‘I am’ to I’m, ‘did not’ to didn’t, ‘do not’ to don’t, it is to it’s as well as many moreIn addition to contractions students are practising to spell and read words ending in ‘l’ ‘e’, for example words such as ‘candle’, ‘bubble’, ‘giggle’, ‘chuckle’, ‘apple’ and some others. You could also quiz your child on these spelling words to see if they can think of more.

In writing, we have come to the end of our narrative writing, and have been quite creative with developing a setting, a character with a variety of different traits, an interesting problem, and a solution to match. We will be learning about information reports in the upcoming weeks; how to organise the facts we read into an information report.

In humanities we have started to learn about the landmarks and interesting facts about New Zealand. We have taken a great interest in sheep and learning how to draw sheep as well as famous landmarks in New Zealand. In addition to famous landmarks in New Zealand, we learnt and watched videos on The Haka – which is an important ceremonial war dance.

In maths, students continue to learn about Multiplication and Division and have we have begun our location unit. Students are doing well with using arrays to find out the answer to multiplication equations.

Science week started in week 6 and the students in the grade 2 year level was able to engage in a science experiment called ‘The Walking Rainbow”. Before the experiment, students had to make predictions about what they think will happen, and as the day progressed, students watched as the rainbow formed.

We also had a science incursion in the gym, which was fun and interesting. Here are some photos of the incursion:

We had pyjama day in week 5 and it was lovely to see everyone in their pyjamas,

Our year 2’s are excited for our first upcoming excursion on Wednesday the 16th of August, 2023.

What a busy term we have had so far, and we are all excited for the rest of the term.
