Why does the PFA exist?

We love our video presentations from the PFA. Click below to view our PFA president, Andrew Gifford providing un update on why we have a PFA at Koonung :

New Team

The PFA is ready for 2021! Our 2021 team is:

Vice President: Martina Johnson (parent of students in Year 7 and 9)

Secretary:           Ann-Maree Smith (parent of student in Year 8)

Treasurer:           Johan Cameron (parent of student in Year 9)

and...  all the parents and friends that participate - that’s you!

We’re so grateful to Nicky Smith (parent of student in year 12), who had been our treasurer for 3 years - and will still be an active member of the PFA!

The next PFA meeting is Monday 1 March, 7:30pm in the Middle Years Centre. Come and meet real parents and friends of the school! We will be confirming the activities for the year and allocating funds to school projects.

Second Hand Life

Thank you to Annie Yeh and Zan Griffith (both parents of year 10 students) who have taken on the role of co-ordinating the Second Hand Uniform Shop! The Uniform Shop would love your donations - it raises money for the school, helps the environment and returns some cash to your pocket. The shop is open on Fridays, 1:15-3:30pm. Contact the Uniform Shop on 9897 4726 during shop hours or email  secondhanduniforms@koonung.vic.edu.au with any queries.

We are also grateful to Fiona McLean (parent of students in year 10 and 12) and Dominique Gifford (parent of students in year 9 and 12) who run the Second Hand Book Sale in December. There are some books still available, contact booksale@koonung.vic.edu.au.

Enhancing the Learning Environment

The PFA helps raise funds to provide new resources for the school. In 2020 $18,513 was used to purchase many items for the school or provide a service, including:

  • French dictionaries
  • Musical production lighting
  • Board games
  • Breakfast Club supplies
  • Garden and maintenance tools
  • Year 12 farewell ice creams
  • Wood Technology Laser Engraver
  • Netball uniforms
  • Sound speakers
  • Cameras
  • Water Deioniser
  • Whiteboards
  • Chemical Storage cabinet
  • Softball-Baseball kit

At the first meeting for the year we have allocated $30,000 for purchases and services in 2021. Most of this money is raised though the Second-hand Uniform Shop and the the Second-hand Book Sale. The other main fundraising event is a Bunnings Bake Sale. We hope to run two bakes-sales this year, one in July, with a “Christmas in July” theme and one in October with a Halloween theme. Unfortunately, at this stage Bunnings is not holding Bake Sales. However, we are in the ballot for a Bunnings BBQ, so watch this space!

Enhancing the School Community: Mother's Day Breakfast

The PFA is keen to create community at Koonung. Our first big event of the year is a Mother's Day breakfast, to be held at the school on Friday 7 May, 7:30-8:30am. It’s time for a new organiser! We’re so grateful to Tara Payne (parent of students in year 10 and 12), who has led the organisation of this spectacular event for many years. Would you volunteer? You won’t work alone, there are already good procedures in place to plan the breakfast and Tara is very willing to help you find your feet. If you are interested please contact Andrew Gifford (0490 831 427).

Can you juggle?

What skill do you have that would enhance the school community? Some examples:

  • Translating PFA news into other common languages at the school. Could you help with this?
  • You love baking - we’d love your help at one of our events.
  • Do you like talking? Make sure you volunteer to interact with potential new parents at an Open Evening.
  • Maybe you play guitar - could you serenade the mothers at our breakfast?

Even if you can’t make it to a meeting and you have an idea or a skill that would help enhance how the PFA contributes to the school community, send us an email at pfa@koonung.vic.edu.au
