Solar Boat Challenge

Buninyong Solar Boat Challenge

On Thursday 26th November, the Grade 6 students participated in the Solar Boat Challenge. The event aimed to challenge students' knowledge of Buoyancy, Circuitry and Solar Energy, as well as require them to develop and display high level skills in teamwork, organisation and time management.

The day began under overcast skies, but as the clouds cleared, the racing heated up. All teams did a wonderful job working together to not only successfully race their boats, but also present all of their research and findings.

Prizes were awarded in a number of categories, including Winning Boat, Best Presentation, Fastest Individual Race, Best Modifications/Improvements and Overall Winners. Well done to all involved in such a wonderful day!

Grade 6 Team

While participating in Solar boats we learnt how to wire a boat, it was
difficult to remember what side the positive and negative went on
and if we forgot what side our boat could have gone backwards. On
the day we enjoyed cheering on others and being able to race our
boat.

Throughout the day the sun went in and out of the clouds
causing our boats to go fast and slow. We were lucky enough to get
into the semifinals, but as we only had 2 solar panels working the
boat with the fastest times so far would go straight into the grand
final. Our boat H20 did go through to the grand final with the fastest
time. It was time to race solar speed, all we could hear was “H20, H20!”

We let our boats go and halfway down the pool the other teams boat fell over
and our boat kept on flying until we hit the other end. Our boat won solar
boats but we could not have done it without our encouraging
teachers and that beautiful sun.
