Teaching & Learning

End of Year Student Reports

At Buninyong P.S, we know it is vital to involve students and their parents/carers in learning. This includes providing a written report to parents/carers on student progress and achievement at least twice a year.

The Department of Education and Training has adjusted the expectations around student reporting for Semester 2 in recognition of the continued disruption caused by COVID-19.

While we have continued to deliver a teaching and learning program and monitor the learning of each student, we have adjusted our usual program to reflect the period(s) of remote and flexible learning.

All schools across Victoria will therefore provide a simplified written report for Semester 2 focussing on what progress has been made and what has been achieved by each child.

The information below will assist when reading the report.

The modified reports will include:

General Statement of Achievement: A comment that outlines how your child has engaged with learning this semester with particular reference to the Personal and Social capability.

A curriculum judgement in English and Maths: A judgement for all areas of English (Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening) and Mathematics (Number & Algebra , Measurement and & Geometry and Statistics & Probability) against the Victorian Curriculum.

This section will also indicate the growth your child has made since each area was last reported against. The growth is indicated by  dotted line and the number represented in the circle is how long ago the subject was last reported against.  i.e 12 means this subject was assessed 12 months ago.

Curriculum statement in English and Mathematics: The comment in this section  outlines what teachers have set out to achieve in English and Maths this semester.

Remote learning specialist Overview: As our specialist teachers have had limited access to students this semester, this judgement is to reflect your child’s completion of submission tasks and attendance at weekly check-ins during the period of remote learning in Term 3. Please note that this judgement has been averaged over all 4 specialist areas.

Specialist curriculum statement: Each specialist area has outlined what the teachers have set out to achieve this semester.

Specialist Comment: This comment reflects your child’s achievement and level of participation in specialist classes from Semester 2.

While reading the reports, please take into account the limited time teachers have had students on site to collect and support learning this semester. Whilst teachers have worked extremely hard to make consistent and accurate judgements, we would not normally put so much emphasis on testing to gain our final assessments of student progress.

Moving to Composite Classes

This week we continue our parent information sessions to help explain our move to a composite class structure in 2021. This week we have two sessions that look at catering for the social and emotional needs of students and the Scotsburn Model.

End of Year Parent - Teacher Interviews.

The end of year Parent - Teacher conferences form a very important part of our reporting process of student achievement. This term, these conferences will once again take place on Webex, similar to the way in which they were conducted in June.

Monday 30th November- Parent Teacher Conference Bookings open. Book your time on Compass.

Friday 4th December – Student Reports available on Compass. (From 4 pm)

Tuesday 8th December – Parent Teacher Conferences Day 1: 4 pm – 6.00 pm

Thursday 10th December – Parent Teacher Conferences Day 2: 1.45 pm – 6.00 pm (Early finish for students at 1 pm)

How will it work?

  • Parents and carers have the opportunity to book a 10 minute interview with classroom and specialist teachers.
  • Once bookings close, teachers will communicate their Webex Meeting Room number to parents/carers who have booked a time.
  • Parents/carers to login at designated time. Please avoid logging in early as other interviews will be in progress. We have factored in a 5 min buffer between interviews to avoid overlapping.
  • At the conclusion of the interview, simply click the leave meeting button.

To make the most of the interviews, below are a few tips to help prepare:

o   Find a quiet space that will allow yourself, your child and the teacher to concentrate             on the discussion. Remember we can have more than one member of the family in               the interview at once so if your partner is at work, they can still join in on the

          conversation from their location.

o   Having a conversation in the virtual world is a little different to that when we meet

face-to-face. Please be understanding that there may be glitches and buffering from

          time to time.

o   The interview is about discussing the end of year written report.

o   Have some questions ready, so they can be discussed at the beginning of the

           interview.

o   If time runs out, that is fine, another time can be organised to continue the

          discussion.

o   Your child is encouraged to be part of the discussion, it is their education after all.

Ultimately, it is up to the parent, should you wish to have your child present for the

           interview.

o   Be kind, as this has been a challenging situation for everyone involved.
