Foundation - Year 1/2

The students in F - 2 are to be congratulated for the positive way they are being self-managers and engaging in the Morning Routine each day within their learning spaces. This week the Foundation students begin school full time. It will be an adjustment attending school five days a week without a rest day, but we know they will continue to be amazing learners.

In Foundation, as learners, we continued to inquire into the St Fidelis community.  As  communicators, we shared our ‘Me Bags’ with each other so that we could find out about who the members of our families are and the different interests and activities we engage in when we are not at school. Some of us shared our favourite toys and books and others shared where they like to go on holidays or what they like to do with their family on the weekend. When speaking to the whole class group, we all looked at our audience and tried to use an audible voice when sharing the contents of our ‘Me Bags’.

As inquirers, those of us in 1/2 continued to find out about our big question 'How does Art tell our story?'. We explored different types of art such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a musical, a mural and Uluru. As thinkers, we considered what makes it art and the story that each piece of art might tell. As researchers, we will continue to explore different art forms and pieces of art and unpack how they tell a story about a person or place.

As writers, in Foundation, we were introduced to full stops. This form of punctuation is used to indicate where our writing ends. Some of us are beginning to record initial sounds when writing and some of us are beginning to use some high frequency words such as ‘I’, ‘a’, ‘me’ and ‘the’ when attempting to record a sentence. In 1/2, we are continuing to focus on how to use punctuation correctly in our writing, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks and commas. We are learning to include capital letters for names of people and places, days, months and the word ‘I’.

As writers, we went outside and illustrated things we could see in the playground. In foundation, we recorded a sentence using the sentence starter ‘I can see…’ In 1/2 we used our senses to record what we can smell, hear, see and feel,  and used the Colourful Semantics Cards to write sentences about these in our Writer’s Notebook. We are beginning to self edit our writing in 1/2 and are learning to identify nouns and adjectives in our sentences by connecting them to the colourful semantics and highlighting them in different colours.

As members of a Catholic community, in Foundation, we identified the different symbols that can be used during prayer and we explored why we pray and where we can pray. We have continued to practise making the Sign of the Cross when we engage in prayer at the beginning and end of the school day.

In 1/2, we have been continuing to unpack different types of prayer, such as prayers of petition and prayers of sorrow, and have written our own prayers to God. As thinkers, we tuned in to the whole school scripture from Luke’s Gospel, ‘Road to Emmaus’ by viewing illustrations of the story and engaging in a See-Think-Wonder. This coming Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent and across the F-2 level, we will explore the significance of Ash Wednesday as the beginning of the 40 Days of Lent

We look forward to the week ahead.

Foundation to Year Two Team,

Leanne Wenckowski, Alexandra Phillips, Stefanie Carriera and Alycia Marsico

YEAR  3/4

We can’t believe it’s almost half way through Term 1 of 2022! Time definitely flies when you’re having fun learning!

As mathematicians, students celebrated ‘Twosday’ on Tuesday 22 February 2022 (22/2/22). One activity we engaged in was building something using only 22 icy pole sticks. Here are some of our creations…

As inquirers, we continue to tune in to our big question ‘How does art help us to understand the past?. As thinkers, we explored the key words ArtPast and Community using the Frayer Model. Take a look…

In STEM, we are learning how to create a light and puppet show for our end of term Art/STEM show. As collaborators and communicators, we worked together to create silhouette puppets using black paper. This week, we investigated what our puppets would look like inside the cardboard box. We used cellophane and torches to create a coloured light. We placed our puppets inside the box and stepped back to watch it all unfold. We were amazed!

Specialist Timetable Changes (Monday 28 February - Friday 4 March)

We are excited for another week of learning!

Year 3/4 Team

Year 5/6

On Friday our students were excited to begin the Inter school sports competition for 2022.  The enthusiasm and excitement that they demonstrated was fantastic. Their sportsmanship and leadership was well presented on the day. Well done.

This term our inquiry reflects on “How can art change the world.” Our learners were given the time and opportunity to engage in an incursion focusing on “How can Indigenous art talk to us?” As an indigenous artist Monica reflected on her past life by using different symbols to interpret her story. Monica told us that different tribes have different symbols to represent different things. As an artist she demonstrated how images tell a story. During our indigenous incursion our learners made connections as to how indigenous art can tell a story. They discovered that this is done through signs and symbols.

Indigenous Art tells us stories from other people from generations to generations. (Sanjay)

Indigenous Art can talk to us by us understanding these stories and getting the message of their pass life and emotions.  (Giselle)

Indigenous Art talks to us by showing us different ways of the story. Symbols represent different interpretations of the story. (Christian)

Indigenous art is a form of language and rather than using words, Indigenous people use symbols and put them together to create a story. (Luca)

As inquirers our learners have been unpacking the learning assets and dispositions.  As collaborators and researchers they have been reflecting on these assets and designing posters to display across the flexible learning space.

As mathematicians our learners are continuing to investigate and explore “Place value” As collaborators our mathematicians have engaged in a variety of tasks such as rounding off 3 and 4 digit numbers, ordering numbers from largest to smallest and smallest to largest. In particular they have enjoyed playing, “pick it or place it” This is a simple yet challenging game that you can play at home as a family.

As writers our learners have been focusing on writing persuasive texts.  As researchers our learners have researched and focused on the purpose and importance of a persuasive text and why it is important to document your point of view to convince your audience. Throughout the week our learners have engaged in documenting reason for and against their chosen topic. They have collected all relevant information and have begun writing there persuasive text.

As people of faith we continue to unpack the whole school scripture: “A Road toEmmaus.” Throughout this scripture our learners have reflected on the importance of Jesus in the story. Our learners continued investigating the scripture by engaging in the thinking routine See Think Wonder.  Our learners were given the opportunity to engage in dialogue to investigate the scripture further.

Over the past few weeks our Year 5 students have been preparing for their Eucharist celebration.  This celebration will be celebrated this weekend. We wish all our Eucharist canditates the best.
