L & T AND LITERACY - Vira Pirrotta

LITERACY

READING @ HOME TIPS

There is no magical formula for learning to read. Children learn in their own time according to their own pace. There is no critical age when all children should have mastered reading.

Children need ongoing quality experiences with books. Providing a regular, reading routine at home assists children in their quest for reading success.

During reading, there are many effective ways to assist children to identify unfamiliar words or correcting errors while reading. Prior to saying anything when assisting your child please allow sufficient wait time. Allow your child to look around the page for clues as too often they will appeal for help.  Rescuing won’t help! Telling them the word does not allow them to become independent.

After waiting sufficient time, if your child is still unsure try saying:

  • Read on and collect other clues.
  • Go back to the beginning of the sentence and re-read what you read.
  • Look at the illustration and see if there are clues there.
  • What do you think would make sense here?
  • Say the first sound and look at the picture to help
  • Does it make sense?
  • Does it sound right?
  • Does it look right?

Always try to keep the reading flowing because it is paramount that the reader comprehends the text. Therefore if your child is labouring over a word and is becoming frustrated, just move them on and continue reading. We do not want reading to become a task. It should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your child.

INQUIRY

Our aim at St Fidelis is to create learning environments that cultivate curiosity and create confident, capable and creative learners. In order to do this, we have engaged the services of Kath Murdoch. She will work with teachers and support them in engaging our students to grow as thinkers, collaborators, self-managers, communicators and researchers.  This term our focus will be on Social Responsibility. In order to engage the students with teachers will focus on the following big questions.

TERM 1- SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Foundation, Year One and Two

Year Three and Four

Year Five and Six

Big Question: How can art tell our story?

An Inquiry Into how artworks help capture and express our histories with a focus on the local area. An inquiry into the designing/making process.

Big Question: How can art help us think about the past?

An Inquiry Into  significant events in Australia’s history and how perspectives about these events are expressed through artworks

Big Question: How can art change the world?

An Inquiry Into how art can be used as a way to influence people’s thinking/action. How democratic community allows freedom and expression. An inquiry into how to make a difference.

Throughout the term, students will engage in many authentic learning experiences that will lead them to produce a piece of artwork for the art show. Something we are all looking forward to.

A Request For Some Assistance

During our school's renovation in 2021, (some of the oldest sections of our School Building) we discovered these beautiful old hard wooden panel folding doors behind some walls. These panels are part of the school's history and there is a story behind these panels. They have been hidden between plaster walls for the last 60 years.

We would like to restore these panels in order to display school photos from the past and present. These photos will retain some of our school's history but also be a great inquiry for our current and future students.

We are asking a parent or parents to take on a project to restore the six folding wooden doors to their original state. The panels need to be sanded and applied with 2 coats of varnish.

Please email Joe Frazzetto (joef@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au) if you are interested in taking on this project. We will be very appreciative and grateful for your support and time.

NUMERACY - Colleen Monaghan

This week was a special one with Tuesday being the 22/2/22! This palindrome day is unusual because it’s also an ambigram, meaning that on a calculator it can be read upside down in exactly the same way.
