What’s happening in Unit 1 Physics class

In VCE Physics Unit 1, we have been building up our knowledge about the principles of thermodynamics and climate science. Right now, we are working on a project that is part of our first SAC where we examine different ways energy-efficient houses can be constructed and use our understanding to connect it to the principles of thermodynamics. Upon working on this project, we enjoyed utilizing the sustainable house kits to complete the practical activities.

Thus far in physics, we have explored the area of thermodynamics. This involved looking at what heat is, scales of heat, thermal equilibrium (and Zeroth’s Law), specific heat capacity, Stefan-Boltzmann’s Law and Wien's Law to explain radiation.

We have also enjoyed conducting the experiments and comparing our findings with experiments that may have had to be re-conduct. Learning about the transfer of heat energy and how, when opening a fridge you are not ‘letting the cold air out’, but you are allowing the heat energy to go in, was interesting.

Not every experiment trial was a hundred percent perfect and successful; however, through the different outcomes we ended up with, we were able to learn skills from our mistakes and eventually finished our experimentation process with satisfying results.

Physics has posed a great challenge, but has helped us to learn to think critically and appreciate it in our everyday lives.

In this unit, we have been covering Thermodynamics and have implemented our knowledge in the practical activities included in Outcome 1. Physics has given us a secondary view of the way our world around us works while still being fun and enjoyable.
