Visual Art NGV Excursion

On Saturday 22 February the VCE Art students had an excursion at the National Gallery of Victoria.  In the morning, the Unit 3 Art students attended an Art Education Victoria event, KickstART.  Top Arts 2020 exhibitors, shared their experiences and discussed the ideas behind their artworks. Our students gained a clearer understanding of the Study Design and took inspiration to develop their own artwork and folio. Students had the opportunity to speak with the exhibitors when viewing their folio.

After lunch, the Unit 1 Art students joined us for the Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines exhibition. The exhibition showcased early collaborations and many of their acclaimed works.

After spending the day viewing and discussing art, students felt invigorated and inspired to create their own artworks.

Visual Art Painting Incursion - Year 10

On Tuesday the 18th of February, 35 Year 10 Art students participated in an oil painting Visual Arts incursion with visiting artist John Lawry.   In the lead-up to the incursion, students had been studying artworks by the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo with a focus on her realistic portrait paintings and the symbolism, backgrounds, culture and meanings within them.    Students have enjoyed developing their powers of observation and composing self-portraits with a focus on personal symbolism. They have gained skills in mixing oil paints to create realistic skin tones and learnt how to highlight with lighter colours to create realistic depth within their portraits.

Our students have had the following to say:

“I loved the independence of learning oil painting techniques and our teacher’s support.  John, the visiting artist gave me great advice that really helped me out with some good tips with highlighting some of the areas on my self-portrait. I’m excited to see the end result.”  - Nicole Muscat

“After learning more techniques, I realised I had more skill in painting than I thought. I now feel more confident in my own abilities and in art.  My painting is looking more realistic than I thought it would. Today has been enjoyable and valuable.” - Sharna Trinh

“Through today’s valuable painting experience, I am proud to say that I feel more comfortable painting portraits.” - Keisha Huynh

“I actually really enjoyed this class. I learnt a lot about creating contrast, tone and shade and about the many different techniques you can use with oil painting.  I am really happy with how my self-portrait is turning out.” - Charlene Bun

“I learnt many new techniques and skills during our art incursion.  Listening to John, it was great to learn about how to use the materials and different mediums in oil painting, which is a new skill for me.  I think I have started getting the hang of mixing correct skin colours and am happy with how it is looking. Lots of different skin tones and shades in my portrait give my artwork volume, making it look more realistic” - Tiahna Nickels

“It was really good to have a professional artist to guide us in our oil painting. I have learnt a lot about creating and blending tones to make my portrait look more realistic.” - Emily Keiv
