Writing

This year we have given each student a Writer’s Notebook. This is a scrapbook for drawing, writing notes, poems, brainstorms, story prompts, story ideas and much more! This is a place for students to draw and write all of their imaginative and creative writing ideas, to prepare for short writes and quick writes in their writing books.  Our first prompt was to create a mythical creature that can swim and fly. Our second prompt was to go outside onto the playground and draw something that you can see and create story ideas based on your drawing.

Wellbeing

Each morning we start our day with a Morning Circle, which involves prayer, special announcements and becoming Present, Centred and Grounded so we are ready to learn.  We also have a collection of positive affirmation cards which we choose two cards to read from. It gives us inspiration for the day with a focus on friendship, teamwork, acceptance, kindness etc.

Maths

This week in maths we've been focussing on place value. Place Value is the value of each digit in a number. For example, the 5 in 350 represents 5 tens, or 50; however, the 5 in 5,006 represents 5 thousands, or 5,000. It is important that children understand that while a digit can be the same, its value depends on where it is in the number.

We began our week by rolling a 6 sided dice 4 times to create a 4 digit number. Students then had to complete a number bust for their number. This included writing their number in numeral form and words, drawing it as a picture, and writing it in expanded form (example; 5000 + 200 + 50 + 1 = 5251). We then focussed on playing the 'Greater Than' game and 'Place Value Knockout'. After each round played students ordered their numbers from smallest to largest, then chose one number to do a number bust with, and identify whether it was odd or even. We will be continuing with similar tasks for Place Value next week.

Inquiry

This week we began our 'Daily Health Hustle'. Everyday for 10 minutes students will run, walk or jog around the basketball court, counting their laps as they go. Students then record how many laps they've done in a table. At the end of the week we will tally up the class total of laps and calculate the distance travelled. With this information we will be exploring Google maps to compare the distance we travelled completing laps at school, to the distance we could go in the local community. The focus of the Daily Health Hustle is to bring awareness to the positive outcomes we feel after completing just 10 minutes of exercise a day. The Daily Health Hustle will continue as a part of our Inquiry curriculum for the whole Term.
