ASH WEDNESDAY

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, a day on which Catholics traditionally resist eating between meals (fasting) and avoid eating meat (abstaining). Many Catholics also attend Mass or have special prayer liturgies.

Lent is a forty day period preparation for Easter. It reminds us of the forty-days that Jesus spent in the wilderness before he took up his ministry. During this time he fasted and prayed. Lent is a time of self-denial and prayer for us as well. During this period, we are called to focus on becoming closer to Jesus by praying a little more, doing good deeds for others, going without something we like and giving generously to others in need. Ash Wednesday is a good time for us to think about what we can do to grow closer to Jesus over the lenten period.

On Tuesday 21 February it will be Shrove Tuesday and we will be having pancakes at school. Why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? It was the last chance for a spot of indulgence before 40 days of fasting, and also an opportunity to use up food that couldn't be eaten during Lent. This included eggs, fat and milk, which were made into pancakes and eaten on that day.

If your child has a dietary requirement please make contact with their class teacher.

This Wednesday 22 February and we will be joining with the parish for the Ash Wednesday Mass at 12:30pm in the church. During this Mass we will also be inducting our student leaders: School and Sports captains as well as the Student Representative Council.

Immediately following Mass we will hold a family picnic at the school. A reminder, as it is Ash Wednesday, we abstain from eating meat on this day.
