Focus on Learning

Mrs Wendy Rheinberger - Inclusion Support Teacher (IST)

Sound Scouts

With support from the Australian Government, Hearing Australia & our own Catholic Schools Office, students, staff & families are able to access this free resource through https://www.soundscouts.com/au/ .

From the Sound Scouts website:

"1 in 10 children and 1 in 3 adults suffer from hearing loss, which left undetected can affect learning, socialising and overall quality of life. Collaborating with the National Acoustic Laboratories, we created an online hearing test app that delivers an immediate report, including next steps if a hearing loss is detected."

At St Joseph's students are able to use this interactive, fun, play-based ipad screener.  This is conducted by me and takes about 10 minutes.  I read the report & share this with your child's class teacher.  I also have direct access to the experts/developers of this resource who are able to give me advice which can then be passed on to families.  If your child's report indicates a follow up screener, this may be due to a number of reasons including recently having recovered from cold.  It is recommended a re-test be given with in 7 days & any areas that may still show lower levels of hearing in either or both ears be checked by your GP.  The report may be printed and given to families.

If this is something you are concerned about with your child, please speak with their class teacher and a hearing screener can easily be arranged.

Miss Judy Allan - Aboriginal Education Assistant (AEA)

Over the past few sessions, Krystle Lamb from Opportunity Hub in Tamworth, has been joining with students every second Wednesday afternoon to learn about country & how students make connections.  Last week students & Krystle began creating a tree that represents them & their connection to country.  It has Aboriginal art that the students added whilst they were learning about the symbols and their meanings.  They will add their poems, that are being written, as the leaves on the tree & finish this during the final week of Term 1.   Thank you Krystle, for sharing your knowledge & passion with the students at St Joseph's. We look forward to learning with you next term.
