An Incidental Discovery

In searching for a photo of Les Appleton I came across the above photo of the 1962 1st XI.

Back: David Coventry, Tony Last, Les Appleton, Geoff O’Brien, Ken Last. Centre: (Fr.) Phil McCormack, Jim Carroll*, John Healy*(C), Simon Ralph*(VC), Steve Mitchell*.  Front:  Kerry Deayton

( *  Have passed away – RIP)

I remembered that Les also played football with North Hobart and went to that club’s website where I found the following photo of the its 1976 side which won the State Premiership against Wynyard in the famous goalpost incident at West Park in Burnie.

I have feeling that Les represented Tasmania at a senior level in both football and cricket – is this the case?  If you have further information, please contact Graeme Rainbow on 0467 514 667.

Kerry Deayton (SVC1958-64) is also in both photos.

Another OV in the team is Ian ‘Sos’ Mills. A further connection – John Devine, Graham Sice and Bob Smith’s sons were later to attend the College, as were Dickie Collins’ grandsons.

Also came across this photo of Kerry Deayton on the same website.

The accompanying caption to this photo:

I don’t know, but the guitarist on the left could well be playing “When the Red, Red Robin comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin’ Along”, for he is 19-year-old Kerry Deayton who starred for North Hobart in his first senior game last Saturday. Kerry ‘came up’ from the Old Virgilians in the Amateur League. He knows how to play the guitar too, as he is a member of the group, “The Statemen’ who play at cabarets and social functions. The two fans are Kerry’s sisters.

A Recent Acquisition

Regrettably, no  St Virgil’s Year Book were published for the years 1952-1960.  We have no few SVC photos  for that period.  Recently acquired the one below.  If any of the readership have photos from that period, could I ask that you email copies to  grainbow@stvirgils.tas.edu.au

Kerry Wilson (SVC 1956-60) went on to play 287games for the Hobart Football Club and figures in three grand finals (1963, 1966 & 1973). He was the club’s games record holder until his total was surpassed by Justin Harvey (another OV, SVC 1990-94) who went on to notch up 350 appearances for the Tigers.
