Further Cricket News

Checking out the Tasmanian Cricket Premier League website the following additional interesting information about Old Virgilian performances emerged. In the April 2021 edition of OVAtion the College acknowledged Enrico DiVenuto’s elevation to the League’s Hall of Fame (pictured above). It ought be further recorded that Todd Pinnington (svc 1986-91) was awarded the same honour in 2020.

The CTPL citation reads thus:

A naturally aggressive top order right hand batsman and wicket keeper Todd Andrew Pinnington was born in Hobart on 21 March 1973.

Playing his entire Grade cricket career at North Hobart he was a star performer with the bat and behind the stumps participating in a total nine first grade premierships – comprising five two-day premierships and four one-day successes.

Up until the conclusion of the 2018/19 season, only 13 players in the competition’s history have surpassed 1000 runs in a season, a feat Todd managed twice in consecutive years. In 1996/97 he accumulated 1,122 runs and in 1997/98 1,080 runs. Given the rarity of someone surpassing 1000 runs in a season, its remarkable that on both occasions he missed out on the aggregate award finishing in second place.

He is one of only eight batsmen to have scored multiple 200+ innings. His first was 211 not out in 1997/98 and the second 237 run out against Clarence on 30 October 1999 in a 2nd wicket partnership with Ben Donaldson of 305. The next day the same pair, playing in a limited overs match against SHSB, had a 2nd wicket stand of 130 and Todd’s went on to score 119*.

His wicket keeping record remains the best in the competition’s history. Over the course of his 193 matches, he claimed 66 stumpings and 328 catches for a total 394 dismissals.
