The atmosphere in the room at the 50+ Summer Luncheon on Sunday 27 February at The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania was so warm and friendly and it was lovely to see so many connections and reconnections being made amongst our old scholar community.
It was wonderful to see those who joined us at the Class of 1971 Reunion at Lenna of Hobart on Monday 14 March with the scrumptious food provided by Waji Catering. We were delighted to see so many reconnections being made amongst our Friends’ Alumni community and want to deeply thank Mark Nicholson for all his work in putting together such an enjoyable evening.
It was wonderful to see those who joined us at the Class of 1981 and 1991 Friends' School Reunion on Friday 8 April. The school tour was followed by drinks and nibbles at Boodle Beasley. We were delighted to see so many reconnections being made amongst our Friends’ Alumni community and we want to thank everyone who was able to attend.
The Class of 2011 Reunion was held on Friday 1 April In The Hanging Garden to celebrate their 10 year reunion, following a tour of the School. It was lovely for alumni to reconnect with old friends over drinks and nibbles.
The Old Scholars' Cricket Team Reunion lunch was held at their old stomping ground at Bell Street Oval and Pavilion on Saturday 5 February. It was wonderful to see many excited to reconnect with their peers and friends. We'd like to thank everyone who was involved in helping to put this day together.
Kelly DRUMMOND-CAWTHORN (1986)
Kelly is currently the Creative Director at Second Echo Ensemble (SEE), a Tasmanian theatre company dedicated to celebrating diversity, challenging assumptions, and providing opportunities for performers of all abilities. SEE was a recipient of the 2020 Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards.
Kelly’s experiences as a professional in the worlds of dance and theatre, and in Higher Education spans three decades of performance, choreography, directing, research and teaching. She has performed with dance and theatre companies in Australia and the United States and her work has been presented in the United States, Canada, Europe, Bulgaria, Brazil, Russia, Uzbekistan, Australia and Korea. As Associate Professor of Dance at the University of Florida's School of Theatre and Dance Kelly taught and developed curriculum in dance technique, composition, repertory, ensemble, pedagogy, performance theory, aerial dance, art and new media, transdisciplinary collaborations and creativity.
Kelly has returned to Tasmania where she has used her skills and talents for the benefit of the local Tasmanian community. She has worked across the community as Live Arts Coordinator including Space Dance coordinator at Salamanca Arts Centre, Creative Producer for Kick Start Arts, Cultural Office at the Moonah Arts Centre and Creative Director at Second Echo Ensemble. Kelly was recently nominated for the 2022 Hobart Young Citizen of the Year Award.

The Clements siblings Jemma CLEMENTS (1993) and brother Saul CLEMENTS (1996) attended School from their home in the Huon. Their father, renowned glass blower, Richard Clements, set up a stall in Salamanca over 45 years ago to sell some of his world-class hand blown glass wares. Jemma took over from her father continuing a wonderful tradition along with her daughters. Then and Now: 50 Years of Salamanca (unlocked)
Sarah FULTON (2021) Congratulations Sarah on being awarded the UTAS George Wade Scholarship to study Agricultural Science. Sarah, following in her mother Amabel FULTON’s (1981) footsteps, is studying Agricultural Science with a double major in sustainable agriculture and crop science and plant health.
Nicole GILL (1994) has been involved in a wide range of conservation projects during her working life. She has also succeeded as an author. In her current work as an Environmental Consultant she is working in an ANU endangered bird conservation research program. A Conservation Detection Dog Handler, Nicole is working closely with a collie-springer spaniel cross. Projects range from searching the Central Highlands for birds and bats affected by wind turbines to sniffing out masked owl pellets to help researchers locate new habitats. Rob GOUGH (current parent) Congratulations Rob on taking line honours in the new two hander section of the 2021 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
Hallie MEABURN (2021) a Royal Hobart Club golfer, is one of Tasmanian’ high performance female athletes. Hallie recently set off to test her skills in the professional ranks in Victoria. First at a series at Rosebud Golf Club followed by competition in the Victorian Open. Hallie, granddaughter of Lindy GOGGIN (1966) is the next wave of one of Australia’s most successful golfing families. Josh NEWTON (2001) always loved the outdoors and the sea. He studied at the Maritime College and currently holds Master 35 and MED 2 qualifications. His practical experience over recent years includes operation of passenger and fishing vessels around the Tasmanian and south eastern Australian coastlines. Josh has worked on a range of vessels varying from displacement vessels to high speed planing monohull F2 fast craft and high speed catamarans. He has worked locally with Wildthing Adventures, Peppermint Bay Cruises and is current Master and Vessel Manager with Navigators, skippering the Hobart to Bellerive service.
Sam NICHOLSON (2004) is remembered by classmates as a keen musician. Grandson of much loved long serving Friends’ Principal Bill Oats, his current band, Quivers, formed in Hobart in 2015 and is currently working out of Melbourne. Quivers recently recorded an R.E.M. covers album. Sam had been concerned the R.E.M. Grammy Award winning group would not be happy with the result. However the legendary rock group heaped praise and compliments on Quiver’s interpretation of the 1991 album Out of Time. Sam describes his and his sister, Romy NICHOLSON’s (1996), love of R.E.M. and “jangly pop” music as a lead into his own taste. Clive TILSLEY (1972) Congratulations Clive on being awarded an AM in the 2022 Australia Day Honours List in recognition for Services to Literature. Clive and his wife Ros Tilsley (Ashdown) (1966) have long been proprietors of Fullers Book Shop.
Helen WALPOLE (1996) undertook a Masters of Curatorship following her passion for design, and museum and cultural heritage management. She has made a name for herself as a Creative Director and Museum Curator and more recently added cartography working with spatial software in mapping. Helen’s work ranges from investigations into what temperature Melburnians stop going outside to an investigation mapping Australian football fandom. Helen is currently Curator of the Australian Sports Museum.

The March 2022 Alumni Reps Meeting was as informative and friendly as usual with Reps dialling in from across Australia and from Canada. It was a great opportunity to connect and share news from across the world. Some of the topics discussed during the meeting included updates about the progress of the new Sports Centre, the School’s Climate Impact Policy and Reconciliation Action Plan as well as the Impact of Giving 2021 publication, final results for the School’s annual giving program Friends’ Together 2021, scheduling of postponed 2021 and 2022 reunions and expanding our Hobart Representatives in this group.
