Technology and Applied Studies

YEAR 7

Year 7 classes are completing the last tasks in the specific areas of Agriculture, Food Technologies and Digital Technologies. Students are currently learning about development and modification and Grok Coding. We continue to be impressed by their willingness to learn and enthusiasm. 

 

YEAR 8

Year 8 Technology students have maximised their opportunities to achieve, whilst working in the areas of Computer Control, Promotional Design, Metal and Agriculture. Students have gained the new skills and knowledge required of this subject has seen them increase their mastery and produce designs and projects of a very high standard.

 

 

YEAR 9

AGRICULTURE

Agriculture students have studied many farming enterprises this past semester. Students have had the opportunity to incubate eggs and raise chickens from birth. With the arrival of some spring lambs from our Mater Dei herd, students have been hands-on in the many sheep husbandry practices required. 

 

FOOD

During the semester Year 9 have been exploring Foods for Special Occasions. Students have been researching why food plays such an important role in these special occasions. They had the opportunity to plan, prepare and decorate a cake for the "Great MDCC Bake Off".

METAL

Metal students in Year 9 have enjoyed manufacturing projects in the workshop this semester. To finish the year students have fabricated a campfire barbecue and a stainless steel spatula. All students have displayed a great deal of pride in their workmanship whilst learning new metalworking skills and knowledge.

 

TIMBER

Timber students have been creating a lathe project, which has involved a more extensive use of woodworking tools and processes. To finish the year off students have created a trinket box that they design themselves. These projects have provided a broad experience in a variety of timber working methods.

GRAPHICS 

Students have been working on 3D modeling software. The class has been recreating real life objects using Sketchup and Fusion 360. They have been able to successfully recreate objects using CAD programs and will be able to print these out using the 3D printer. 

 

 

YEAR 10

AGRICULTURE

Year 10 have been involved in the “Cows Create Careers” program initiated by Dairy Australia. Students have been raising and feeding a four week old dairy calf which was donated by a local dairy farm. Students have enjoyed this experience and has provided them with great insight into the dairy industry.  In Year 9 and 10 classes students have been looking after two Angus cows which will be due to calve early next year.

 

FOOD

This semester, students have been studying food trends which has resulted in them designing and baking their own modern muffin creations. 

 

METAL

This semester Year 10 have been given the opportunity for students to design and construct a product of their own choice.  While some students were happy to produce the set projects on offer, others spent a great deal of time and effort out of class to design and plan their own project. Fire buckets were the most popular choice with an offset smoker, Asado grill, welding benches and coffee tables making up some of the other designs.

 

TIMBER

Year 10 Timber have primarily worked on two projects this year which included clock project and a small coffee table. Each task developed joinery skills allowing students to extended their knowledge with timber concepts. 

 

 

INFORMATION, SOFTWARE AND TECHNOLOGY

This term Year 9 and 10  students have been researching and developing examples of multimedia projects. This has involved authoring and creating examples and samples of video,sound and image files. During the term students have progressed and moved their focus to include creating, installing and monitoring computer networks and designing, developing and maintaining websites.
