Secondary Sports Update

QGSSSA Cross Country

The Cross Country training squad has been training hard for the upcoming QGSSSA Cross Country Championships held on Saturday 14 May at Rivermount College, Yatala. Over half the squad has attended one of the two meets since Cross Country Carnival and as a result, almost everyone has improved their times, many by 2 minutes or more. Last Saturday morning, 20 girls ran a challenging course at the Sherwood Arboretum, and this week, almost 30 girls ran a very challenging and hilly course on the old Victoria Park Golf Course. Again, there were a number of great performances, with Leila Johnson finishing 3rd in her division with a time of 10:03 minutes and being awarded a medallion for her placing. With just two weeks to go and one more meet, all squad members are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible.

Training Week 3

Wednesday 4 May         6:30 am - 8:00 am            Victoria Park
Thursday 5 May             4:00 pm - 6:00 pm             Rivermount College, Yatala
Friday 6 May                   6:30 am - 8:00 am              Kalinga Park

Autumn Fixtures – Football and Touch

Autumn fixtures will continue with the same training and game schedule as posted on the College app. Over the next few weeks, there are a number of rescheduled games; as such, families need to ensure they check the app and please advise coaches and the Sports Department if they cannot make any of the games. Please see the College app for full fixture details and approximate bus arrival times back at the College.

Could we please ask that all students honour their commitment to the sport and their team. We have had a number of students not attend training or want to pull out completely. As we are halfway through the competitive season, this is very disruptive to not only their team but the other schools who we are playing. Clayfield must put forward competitive teams and as such, students must honour their commitments and attend all training and games.

Winter Sports – Pre-season Training

Pre-season will commence in Week 4 with 1 to 2 sessions for each sport before a full training schedule in Weeks 5 to 9 to prepare for fixtures played Saturday mornings of Term 3.  Full details will be posted on the College app and Croc Board by the end of Week 2. Any students who still wish to sign-up should contact the sports department prior to Week 4. Please ensure that you can commit to the requirements of the sport you have chosen before you add your name to a sporting list.

Gymnastics Student Reporter

Matilda Woodhead

Despite having a fracture in her leg and being unable to compete in the QGSSSA Gymnastics competition late last month, Matilda Woodhead became a student reporter for the day and practised her journalism skills. She was armed with a camera and a clipboard of questions and became a roving reporter for our fantastic Gymnastics Team. She did an absolutely fantastic job and wrote the following article.

On Tuesday 29 March, Clayfield College hosted the annual QGSSSA Artistic Gymnastics! Clayfield did extremely well, and all the gymnasts performed the best they could, and everyone had a ball. It was great to see the Clayfield College army come to cheer on the girls competing and get to watch the action. Clayfield came away with a few wins, and all the girls should be really proud of that. Some of the gymnasts competing already do gymnastics outside school and have reached a very high level. We have some girls doing international competitions, and other aspiring gymnasts in Levels 6 and 7. These girls all enjoy competing and the joys gymnastics brings. At the competition, the gymnasium’s new renovations looked great and all of the girls; Clayfield or otherwise, really enjoyed the improved equipment. To top it off, ex-Olympian Georgia Godwin, St Aiden’s alumni came to the competition to cheer the girls on. This was amazing because Georgia is many of the gymnasts' hero. In essence, it was an exciting competition and Clayfield did exceptionally well!
