Alumni at Koonung
We are so lucky to have such wonderful Koonung Secondary College alumni who are happy to return to the College to inspire our current students with their pathway story since completing Year 12.
On Wednesday 27 April, we welcomed Gemma Watts (Class of 2010) and Thomas Shelley (Class of 2018) to the College to address all Year 10 students during their career pathways class. It was brilliant for the students to hear about their different study pathways and where they are now. Gemma chose TAFE (her choice instead of university) and Thomas chose university – and both now have fantastic careers.
Gemma is a beauty industry MC, beauty writer, founder of GlowJournal.com and founder of the Glow Journal Podcast. Thomas is completing a Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin at nights, whilst working full-time in the Mercedes-Benz Graduate program. On Thursday 19 May, eight students from Years 11 & 12 who are studying Business Management or Accounting, are heading to EY (Ernst & Young) professional services firm in Melbourne’s CBD. This fantastic opportunity will enable the students to:
- Meet and hear from alumni from Ourschool’s partner schools who are working at EY
- Learn about the corporate workplace, different departments / teams, and jobs
- Hear from employees who completed the Graduate program and the importance of ‘vacationing’ as these are unknown to high school students
- Learn about different post-school pathways including the skills, qualifications and experiences required to work for the firm
- Gain a better understand of the changing landscape of work, jobs of the future, expectations of employers,
- Provide an opportunity for students to meet EY employees (some who will be alumni of Ourschool schools) and to ask questions of professionals
- For alumni / EY employees to instil confidence and self-belief in the students and encourage them to aspire and strive
Koonung Secondary College’s Alumni Program is being developed in partnership with Ourschool, www.ourschool.net.au, a not-for-profit service that helps government secondary schools build a thriving alumni network to benefit current students and the school community.
