Every Day Matters
This term we hosted our first ever whole school assembly. It was was so great to see all three year levels gathered together to celebrate success and share up coming events. The assembly was student run and I could not be more proud of all of our student leaders and student performers in the way they presented themselves in front of the whole school.
During this assembly, I spoke about our college values; Purpose, Curiosity, Innovation and Resilience. In particular, the term 2 value in focus; Curiosity.
After a term of learning about ourselves in our new classes, with our new classmates and teachers, we get a better sense of ones self, we have a better understanding of our purpose.
In term 2, I encouraged all of us to start to become more curious.
As a Chemistry and Biology teacher, I could not help myself but to take the opportunity to provide a short lesson on the importance of building neural connections in the brain.
Curiosity and the act of experiencing new things creates more and more neural connections which improves our overall brain power.
As a college, we hold our values very dearly and are working hard to support all community members to showcase these values daily, at Homestead and in the community.
On Wednesday 18 May, Homestead took part in a curriculum day where we continued our work on our Vision and Values. The work, most importantly, started with many students as part of the focus groups on Student Voice and Agency and their co-ownership of learning.
It is a very exciting time for a new school to be developing such positive culture with our students. In particular, it was a very proud moment to have Emily Borcea, Chezahn Pomare and Lachlan McDonald join staff on this day and share the work they undertook, hear students speak frankly about their experiences and provide excellent feedback. Some of my stand out moments were captured with some of the student quotes below.
"Homestead is such a different school and I really appreciate this"
"At Homestead they [staff] actually want our opinion"
"Here it is truely a collaborative effort"
