Years 7-9 Parents – Option Course Selection for 2022

The Curriculum Handbooks for Years 8, 9 and 10 in 2022 will be available this afternoon via SEQTA Documents. Please note these handbooks provide a reference for the courses available in each level, and in particular the Options courses.

Students in Years 7-9 will hear from the relevant Heads of Learning Areas next week during Homeroom so they can learn about the courses available in 2022 with the course selection process opening via SSO later in the week.

A separate email will be sent to parents with further details of the timeline and process for each year group.

Co-curricular offerings in Technologies

The Co-curricular clubs, sponsored teachers in the technologies department, offer students the opportunity to further explore an option in which they are passionate. Whether that passion lies in Wood Technologies, Digital Technologies, Food Science, Textiles or Engineering, our teachers have designed activities to broaden student learning outside of class time.

First Lego League Robotics

On the back of their first-place win at RoboCup Junior, the JTC Robotics Club has two teams preparing for the First Lego League competition held in November.  Students are researching the field of logistics and designing a prototype to increase ease of shipping items. They will also engineer and program a robot to work through a series of challenges. Each week students work through team building activities and engineering tasks.  If you are a professional in the field of logistics and would like to provide some expertise and guidance to our teams, please contact anna.davila@cewa.edu.au

Wood Technologies Club

A new initiative for Year 9 and 10 students started by Mr. Jordan Sell, the after-school woodwork class offers an opportunity for students to further develop their woodworking skill set and produce some great take home projects. The first project is a Sandboard where students can individually shape and design their very own board. Students meet on Monday afternoons to work on their projects with friends.

Textiles Club

Over the past few years, textiles introduced a Year 8 option and several upper school Textiles courses. With growing classes and interest in the subject, last year a new initiative was born, Textiles Club! Enthusiastic students in Year 8 -12 attend Textiles Club on Wednesdays during lunch to further develop their practical skills by either putting in additional time into class projects or working on personal projects.  Students have created a variety of quality pieces during Textiles Club such as bucket hats, dresses and endless scrunchies!

Allez La France!  Ganbatte Nihon! Forza Italia!

In Week 7 we celebrated Languages Week at John XXIII College in order to raise awareness of the benefits of learning and engaging in a second language and highlight the linguistic diversity in our community.

Our Languages Teachers shared their passion for Italian, French and Japanese by organising a myriad of wonderful activities for the students to enjoy. The Year Sevens competed in the “Tour de France” on scooters around the tennis courts; the Year Eights competed in the “2021 Olympic Games”; the Year Nines tested their language skills in an “International Quiz” and the Year Tens played traditional games of kendama from Japan, petanque from France and learnt to dance the “Tarantella” from Italy. All activities were accompanied by tasty treats from around the globe.  Homerooms and teachers were also invited to participate in

In addition, the staff at the College were treated to a delicious morning tea with a range of international cuisines including pizza, sushi, pains au chocolat and biscotti.

The Language Team of Ms Helen Aghdasi, Ms Elena Cinini, Ms Nicola Griffin-Appadoo, Ms Clare Galati and Ms Marie Armand are to be thanked for their tireless effort and generous spirit in planning, ordering, catering and orchestrating so many wonderful events.  In addition, a very special thanks to two of our ex-students, Ashleigh Smith and Dylan Paull for their role as Olympic officials. Thanks also to Mr Douglas Watson and Ms Jessica Donovan for their support in ensuring the Olympic Games went well.

We are truly fortunate to have such depth and a variety of languages and cultures in our midst. We are so lucky to be able to have so many opportunities to join together in celebration, come rain or shine.

Grazie mille, arigatoo gozaimashita, merci beaucoup.

Year 11 Politics and Law Excursion

On Tuesday, Year 11 Politics and Law ATAR students attended court and Parliament. This excursion provides students with the opportunity to observe our legislature and judiciary at work – broadening and advancing their understanding of the law, legal principles, the court system and the processes and procedures undertaken by Parliament for effective governance in the state.

In the morning, students attended a criminal trial at the District Court of Western Australia and watched a case listed for sentencing. Students also participated in an empty court activity in the Supreme Court – testing their knowledge of court layout and the roles of court personnel – before going to the Magistrates Court to view various listings.

In the afternoon, students visited Parliament House and met with Dr David Honey, Member for Cottesloe, who spoke at length about the vital role our parliament plays. Dr Honey also provided students with a memento of their visit – a commemorative badge for Edith Cowan’s 100th anniversary of being elected to the Western Australian Parliament.

Students then watched a rather spirited session of Question Time in the Legislative Assembly. The Opposition were by no means hindered by their reduced numbers – firing vigorous Questions Without Notice at the Premier, Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport.

A memorable time was had by all. Many thanks to Ms Abbie Collier for accompanying the class on the excursion.

RUOK? Day

On Thursday we continued the College’s tradition of raising awareness around the RUOK? message of checking in with friends and family. Starting a conversation that could change a life. As part of the Rite Journey program, the Year 9’s were set the challenge of raising awareness around the RUOK message and creating opportunities for a conversation to happen, and generally to spread positivity around the College campus. This occurred through positive messages being delivered to students in Homerooms and also posted around the College. During lunch Year 9 students also set up stalls creating an RUOK Fair and Year 9 band Stattik Marsh entertained us with a blistering set.

The message that was most powerful came from our Head Boy, Eddie Monisse, who spoke at assembly about the support he received from a close friend, when he had been struggling. His advice to the students:

“Be the person you needed when you were at your lowest.”

Heal Country

Hip Hop artist, Josh Eggington, engaged students in Aboriginal culture during a Chapel Lawn concert at lunch time on Wednesday. Originally scheduled for NAIDOC Week, the event was postponed due to the COVID restrictions in place at the time.

Joshua Eggington (a.k.a. Flewnt) is a Noongar Koreng artist and raps about his culture and life experiences. Through his chosen art form, Flewnt seeks to promote his culture and strives to better his community.

Flewnt addressed the 2021 NAIDOC theme, Heal Country, and used his music to remind us that this country Always Was Always Will Be Aboriginal Land. Flewnt concluded the performance with his debut song, Kya Kyana, ‘which means to survive’. It was an entertaining and thought-provoking concert for students and staff – and a reminder that the celebration of the culture and history of First Nations peoples is not limited to NAIDOC week.
