Secondary

Year 10 Pathways

This is an important time for Year 10 students as they deliberate over course selections and pathways for 2018. There are two very important events on Wednesday 28 June. The Year 10 Day of Competence (for students) and the Year 10 Course Selection Evening (for parents). During the day, students will hear from a variety of guest speakers and will take part in seminars designed to inform and enthuse them about all the possibilities that lie ahead.  It is imperative that all students are present on the day, punctual and in full school uniform.  The Year 10 Course Selection Evening for parents will also be held on Wednesday 28 June at 7:00pm in the Gonzaga Barry Lecture Theatre.

I strongly encourage all parents to attend this important event as it will enable you to assist your son or daughter in an informed way with their decisions about pathways and courses. I look forward to meeting you and assisting with any queries or concerns you may have.

Year 7 Retreat Day

This week the Year 7 students experienced their first secondary school retreat. The day began with Mass celebrated by Fr Joseph Sobb SJ, who reminded the students of the example of St Louis in Christian service. For the rest of the day the Faith Retreats team took the students on a ‘spiritual workout’, combining highly energetic activities, with input on how we can all develop spiritually and times of personal reflection and prayer.

Mock Trials

Congratulations to our Mock Trial team that participated this week in the Supreme Court. They faced Rossmoyne in Round 3 of the competition and had resounding wins in both the case and the trial. Our students put up a great fight as the Prosecution for the stalking by Mr Fink!

The team was made up of an all-boys team this time around. Well done to all members who enthusiastically attended lunch meetings in preparation of the case.  The team was as follows:

Solicitor:               Florian Mitteregger

Witness 1:             Charlie Richards

Witness 2:             Rory Hewson

Court Orderly:    Toby Morgan

Reserve:                  Cullen Binet

A thank you to Ms Daisy Farley (appointed lawyer) for her legal support to our students.

Many thanks also to family members who came along to offer their support.

Year 12 Politics and Law Excursion

On Wednesday of this week the Year 12 Politics and Law class had an excursion to various law courts in the central city area and then on to Parliament House. They were lucky enough to be able to go into the almost new David Malcolm Justice Centre where they sat in on a civil case involving one of Clive Palmer’s companies. They then sat in on an arson trial in the Supreme Court as well as a sentencing in the case of a “machete wielding burglar”. Interestingly, this person was sentenced to home detention with an ankle bracelet.

In the afternoon the group went to Parliament House. The premier, Mark McGowan spoke to them briefly as did a number of ministers. They were also able to watch Question Time – as always, it was a very spirited occasion.

Thanks to Ms Daisy Farley and Mr Chris Laurino (student teacher) for accompanying the class on the excursion.

Year 11

The Year 11 students participated in their Id Quod Volo Leadership Day with their Homeroom Teacher and House Coordinator on Monday 12 June. Id Quod Volo is Latin for "that which I desire" and the day marks the start of the journey towards student leadership in 2018. Each House travelled to a different venue to further develop skills in the areas of leadership, teamwork, communication, service and reflection. The day's activities also focussed upon the nature of the various leadership positions and the criteria and process for nomination. Students will take the next four weeks to discern whether they will nominate for a formal leadership position in Year 12. Thank you to the House Coordinators for developing such positive and interesting itineraries.

The Year 11 Supper Dance concluded Week 8. Held at the Bendat Basketball Stadium, the theme for the evening was ‘Enchanted Garden’. The students looked amazing and the decorations organised by Mr Del Pizzo and Mr Jansen added a real ‘wow’ factor.

The venue staff made a point of mentioning how impressed they were with the calibre of students in attendance. Thank you to the Student Representative Council and in particular, Jasmine Willson and Molly Urwin, the Event Captains, for the hard work and organisation that went into ensuring the night was a success. Thank you also to the staff in attendance.
