A Look In The Mirror

The story is told of parishioners speaking to their Parish Priest:

‘Our Parish is dying Father. Young people do not want to come to Church’.

After listening to his parishioners, the Priest decided to hold a service to mark the ‘death’ of the Parish. He placed an open coffin at the front of the Church and invited the congregation to come forward and pay their respects. As the parishioners peered into the casket they were met with their own reflection. There was a mirror at the bottom of the casket.

Clearly it is an exaggerated story. However, the same message was reinforced to me when I recently had the pleasure of meeting the Jesuit Province Leader. Fr Brian McCoy SJ described the modern Church as the ‘Church of the Laity’. It is our collective responsibility to be active participants in the life of the Church.

We are thrilled that many within our community have taken the opportunity to respond to our external survey instrument. Our College is certainly not dying – it is thriving in so many ways but the input we receive will ensure that planning for our College’s future reflects the feedback we receive.

The last three weeks have been very significant for the Church. Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi. The greatest gift that Jesus gave is his very self. This is made possible through the sacrament of the Eucharist which was celebrated with solemnity last weekend. It is the gift ‘par excellence’. The previous two weeks had the very important acknowledgements of Trinity Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. As always we encourage our students and families to engage in the life of the Parish.

Together, let us seek justice.

Yours sincerely

Visit By Fr Chris Gleeson

At the beginning of Semester 2 Fr Chris Gleeson SJ will be working with staff as part of our Professional Learning Program. Fr Chris is an outstanding Jesuit educator and excellent presenter. I often refer to his writings when I am looking for ideas, guidance and inspiration.

Whilst in Perth, Fr Chris will also give a presentation to parents and the wider community. Please refer to the link for details – I highly recommend parent attendance.
