Around The Primary

Dear Parents

The sunshine has made a glorious start and the students are arriving each day looking happy and enthusiastic for the learning adventure ahead.

It always astounds me how much we manage to achieve in a week in the Primary school, for example, this week the Years 2, 3 and 4 attended the Waste Education ‘Nude Your Food’ Incursion, the Years 5 and 6 learnt all about puberty in their Growth and Development sessions and also attended a Plenary Council Workshop with Mrs Murphy (Director of Mission), the Year 3’s enjoyed a visit to the Hyogo Cultural Centre and the Pre-Primary to Year 3 students participated in a tennis coaching session.

Preparations are also now well underway for the new school year. Staff have been very busy working on students' reports and booklists.

Our College Presentation Night will take place in the St Louis Centre on Wednesday 28 November at 7pm. As this is an important community event for our College all students from Years 5 and 6 are expected to attend. The Primary Singers and Wanju Voices will be providing some special musical entertainment alongside the Secondary students. Please save the date!

Kind regards

Duty of Care

Outside supervision is available from 8.15 am.  No supervision is provided before 8.15 am and after 3.30 pm.

Primary students are not permitted to play on any play equipment before or after school and all gates will be locked at the end of the school day.

Pre-Kindy, Kindy and Pre-Primary children must be collected and supervised by an adult at the end of their sessions. It is also important to note that the children are not permitted to use the large climbing frame before or after school.

Students from Year 1 to Year 3 are encouraged to use the ‘loop’ on Mooro Drive for drop off and pick up. A ‘family name card’ must be clearly visible for the duty teacher. Please email Tracey McGann in Administration tracey.mcgann@cewa.edu.au to obtain a card.

Students from Year 4 and above are required to use the Main Car Park (entry off John XXIII Avenue) for drop off and pick up. The small carpark near Pre Primary is for Pre Kindy, Kindy and Pre Primary families only.

Nude Your Food

This week children in Years 2, 3 and 4 attended a Waste Education incursion called “Nude Your Food”. Nude foods are fresh fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and water that are free from disposable packaging. At the interactive incursion the children learnt about what a healthy lunchbox is and how they can make healthy food choices to pack in their lunchbox. They got to experience choosing a suitable lunchbox, packing it with healthy and environmentally friendly choices and then discussing the benefits of their choices. The children learnt about the ingredients of store-bought convenience snacks which are often laden with sugar and unhealthy additives. They also learnt how long it takes for common school waste to break down, ie juice boxes =300 years. The benefits of packing a rubbish free lunch are numerous and by taking part, children are reducing their environmental footprint, learning about the importance of reusing and recycling and, at the same time, developing a good understanding of the importance of nutrition. The following link gives ideas on packing nude food lunchboxes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN4pdClNsdM

Get Creative About Safety

At the end of last term, the Year 1 students learnt about how to recognise the smell of leaking gas and then entered the ‘Get Creative about Safety’, colouring in competition hosted by KidSafe WA. There were over 260 entries from a number of schools. Anita Tsvetkov, Program Manager of KidSafe WA visited the Year 1 children on Wednesday 31 October to announce some exciting news! A huge congratulations to Ciara Thornton, the third prize winner for the Junior Primary division. Ciara won a personal $10 Coles/Myer voucher and a first aid kit for the school. There were also some highly commended entries who got a certificate to recognise their great work. Well done Charlotte Blaxell, Alice Wever, Florence Pedler and Olive Reside!

Caligraphy, Chigirie and Obentou

On Wednesday, the Year 3 students visited the Hyogo Prefectural Government Cultural Centre in City Beach. The students learnt about kendo (traditional martial art) and participated in language and cultural activities related to the Japanese Folk story ‘momo tarou’. They also made a flag with the word ‘Japan’ written in calligraphy and a chigirie (paper collage art) of the character ‘momo tarou’. Students enjoyed a delicious obentou consisting of karaage chicken, sushi, edamame (soybeans), salad and sushi. Well done to everyone for managing to eat their obentou with chopsticks!
