Around The Primary

Dear Parents

Welcome back to Term 2.   We hope that you have all enjoyed a relaxing, yet fun filled, term break and were able to celebrate Easter with family and friends.

Spending time with the students both in the playground and classrooms is wonderful. Their joy in sharing holiday stories and their enthusiasm towards a new term has been very evident this week.

Staff have returned fresh and eager to continue providing many valuable learning opportunities and support to all students. We are looking forward to a great term ahead.

This term we welcome three new staff members to the primary school, Ms Maggie Crowley (1B classroom teacher), Mrs Sonia Thomas (1G classroom teacher) and Mr Steven Williams (PE teacher). Our new staff members have already spent time with both staff and students and have quickly become important members of our school community.

Ms Maggie Crowley

I am so thrilled to be back at John XXIII with such an amazing staff to work with. The students and families have been very welcoming, Year 1 Blue are delightful in every way and I know we are going to have a fantastic year together. Returning to the College is a blessing!

Mrs Sonia Thomas:

I’ve really enjoyed my first few days in Year 1, getting to know the children and parents.  I have been blessed to be part of the John XXIII community and I’m looking forward to broadening that relationship as a teacher.  Thank you to everyone for your warm welcome.

Mr Steven Williams:

It has been a great start to Term 2 and I am excited to be a member of the John XXIII team.  I am really looking forward to getting to know all the primary students and making the most of the amazing sport facilities

Kind regards,

Mother's Day

Next Friday we want to celebrate our incredible Mums.

All Mothers are invited to our Primary Mass dedicated to Mums. The Mass will take place Friday 10 May at 9am in the gymnasium. We hope all Mothers are able to join us but if this is not possible, a special Aunty or Grandmother may like to come along.

Straight after Mass a light morning tea will be served in the Exhibition Centre. For catering purposes please, RSVP if able to attend.

On Friday Mothers are also invited to pop into classrooms between 8:30-8:45 prior to heading down to the gymnasium.

ANZAC Day

This week we remembered the ANZAC's.

The Upper Primary students participated in an ANZAC Assembly for Year 3-12 and in their classrooms completed activities to remember the soldiers. The Junior Primary students spent time reflecting by enjoying stories and sharing in prayer.

As a school community we remember, honour, pray for and reflect upon the sacrifices made by so many.

The Year 5 students identified the importance of commemorating and thanking the soldiers. Connections were made to family, and they watched an ABC clip showing a 3D Gallipoli landing.

They have kindly shared some of their thoughts:

Harry Pazin

It is important to remember the soldiers who have fought for us and died.

We have them to thank for our freedom.

Olivia Eastman

My 4 times Great Uncle served in the First World War and won a Victoria Cross.

We have an exact replica.

Ayva BakerWe can show respect to the soldiers who fought for our country by raising the Australian flag, singing the national anthem and praying for them.

Devin Finn, Kate Wagner, Joshua McGlew and Cate Thomaz from Year 5 have used poetry to reflect on the troops, while Joshua Standen and Brody Stevenson from Year 4 created a story map.

Money Tree

Our Term One ‘Money Tree’ fundraising project was very successful. It has been wonderful seeing students visit the tree showing interest in the varied leaves and the amount of money each leaf represented. We are very grateful for the many donations made. As promised, we are now able to reveal how much money was raised for Project Compassion.

A big thank you to Mrs Greed (Accounts Department) and Mr Del Pizzo (Community Relations) who during the holidays, delivered all the coins to the bank to be counted. We are proud to inform you that we raised $2589.85 – a super effort from everyone!

OT Night

A reminder to all Kindy parents that the first of two workshops will be presented by Sue Beurteaux, an Occupational Therapist, on Thursday 9 May at 6:30 in the MacKillop Room. We look forward to welcoming many parents to Sue’s informative and interactive workshop.

5G Zoo Camp

Our Year 5 students discovered the Perth Zoo after dark and learnt the importance of biodiversity through engaging activities.  They spent the night and were lucky to wake up to the morning chorus of zoo animals.  Overall, they experienced amazing animals, fresh air and fun.
