A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
SECOND CAMPUS FOR McKINNON SECONDARY COLLEGE
Tuesday, 20 March 2018 was a significant day for McKinnon Secondary College and one to be celebrated.
Premier Daniel Andrews with our local Member for Bentleigh, Mr Nick Staikos attended an Assembly to announce a second campus for McKinnon.
This was an exciting announcement that will indeed change McKinnon forever.
I thanked them for their advocacy for public education, for investing in future provision for the many families moving into the area and also for their faith and belief in this community to deliver an exceptional education for the children in our care. A wonderful gift and opportunity and a great legacy!
We will now begin discussions with this community – staff, students and parents to develop plans for our future!
Extensive collaboration will ensure all voices are considered so that the best educational decisions can be made about the use of the second campus.
Our commitment is to continue to do our very best to remain a school of excellence - a jewel in the crown for the Victorian Public Education system.
Along with Premier Daniel Andrews and the Member for Bentleigh Mr Nick Staikos other guests at the Assembly included Federal Member for Hotham Clare O’Neil, Mayor of Glen Eira Tony Athanasopoulos, Executive Director for the Department, Bayside/Peninsula Area Simon Hamilton, CEO of Glen Eira, Rebecca McKenzie and staff and students of McKinnon Secondary College.
ANNUAL REPORT PUBLIC MEETING
The Annual Report Public Meeting was held last Tuesday night at the College. We are very pleased to report McKinnon Secondary College continues to build on its strengths in academic performance and student well-being. We are very grateful to the parents who attended this meeting and thank them for their contribution to the college. I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Kan and Mr Long for their efforts in preparing the Annual Report for 2017. The report will be presented to School Council and will then be available on the college website at www.mckinnonsc.vic.edu.au
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
Six of our female student leaders had the pleasure of attending the International Women's Day Breakfast as hosted by the Women in Rotary. The topic was "Let them Roar: Explore the road to success". The students left feeling empowered with a strong message of equality being something to continually work towards. I thank Jenna Dimitrakas, Sienna Herterich, Ramanika Nair, Lee-Ling Bristow, Evie Krieger and Xin Er Wee for representing the school at this important event.
I would also like to acknowledge Ms Felmingham and Ms Andrieux for organising this event for the students.
Pi DAY 2018
On Wednesday 14 March, McKinnon celebrated Pi Day with the annual Pi Reciting Competition. We had class champions from all Mathematics classes battle it out to recite as many decimal places of the irrational number pi as they could to determine overall year level champions. Our overall winner on the day was Yonghan Wang (Year 11) from Chisholm who recited 249 places. This is a wonderful achievement and will be hard to beat. Well Done Yonghan!
Thank you to Ms Mauger and Ms Krommydas for organizing such a fun mathematical experience and Mr Liakakos for creating the first prize.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
From Wednesday 14 March to Friday 16 March McKinnon Secondary College entered 18 teams into the Victorian All Schools Beach Volleyball Championships. All teams participated with a large amount of respect both on and off the court over the three days of competition. The teams had great success with two gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals. The two gold medal winning teams, the Year 8 Boys and the Year 10 Girls, are now the number one ranked school beach volleyball teams in Victoria as the competition is open to public and private schools alike. We congratulate all students for their efforts in this event.
I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr De Salvo for his organization of this event and for giving these students an opportunity to shine!
CENTRAL AUSTRALIA TRIP
On Saturday 8 April and Sunday 9 April two separate groups totalling 141 Year 10 students and 12 staff will be departing for the 2018, Central Australian Tour.
I wish them all an unforgettable adventure and know they will return with wonderful stories and very fond memories.
There is an enormous amount of time and energy that goes into organising a tour like this and I would like to thank Mr Blackmore and Ms Nicholls, and for their efforts. I am sure all staff and students will enjoy this amazing adventure and we look forward to the trip being showcased at Assembly.
UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS - TERM 2
All students are required to wear full winter uniform from the beginning of Term 2. It is unacceptable for the students to be in breach of the school uniform requirements.
We thank parents, on whom we rely, to assist us by ensuring their children wear the uniform appropriately.
END OF TERM
We are now at the end of Term 1, 2018. It has by all accounts been a very successful and smooth start to our calendar year.
I thank staff for their professionalism and commitment to making our school great, the parents for their confidence and continued support, and the children for being who they are!!!
It is such a pleasure to be a part of this school community.
