Getting down to Business in 5/6!

It has been an exciting and busy start to Term 3 in Turquoise community! We have delved into the secrets of business and marketing at our Mini Boss incursion, made some great new friendships in our Prep Buddy program and brought out our competitive side at our 3-6 athletics carnival! Here we have our Turquiose reporters Angelin, Chanel and Zayan to give us an insight into some of these exciting activities

Athletics Carnival

Students from all over grade 3-6 participated in the Athletics carnival on Thursday the 26th of July. Many children thought it was a fun day, a lot of students loved the sprinting events and the long jump/triple jump events. Students thought the Relay event was great, especially the students and teachers in that specific event. Everybody cooperated and worked well together. The encouragement from all the house colours, was amazing everybody was cheering everyone on, even if they weren’t one of their friends or someone they knew. Every single student was a really good sport and helped each other out even if it meant they lost. Overall everybody was a winner, even though Blue house won the Athletics Carnival for this year.

Smoothie Bar Incursion

On the 17th of July, the grade 5/6s attended the Mini Boss Smoothie Bar incursion. They were put into groups by our teachers based on people they usually wouldn’t work with. They had to work as a team and collaborate to pitch their ideas about the smoothie they made. Our teachers had to decide a winning business by scoring them out of five in different topics such as teamwork, presentation skills, creativity, critical thinking and financial literacy. I asked students about how they felt and what they enjoyed about the smoothie boss incursion, and this these were their responses. “It was very fun and showed we can run a business if we worked in a team, it also reminded us to make thoughtful and relevant decisions” said Meah. “I loved tasting other people’s smoothies and I was very sad I couldn’t drink them all” thought Trisha.

After all this, students were able to create and pitch their ideas to their teachers and peers by presenting it as a Shark Tank presentation.

Prep Buddies Program

All grade 5/6’s participated in the prep buddy system and it was a lot of fun. Students were able to experience helping younger children in reading and writing, to become better role models. The grade 5/6’s meet up with the preps every fortnight to do activities that help their education. I asked grade 5/6 students about the prep buddy sessions and these are their responses: “ I liked it, it was a great idea to work with preps.” said Tamyra  “It’s good, all the preps were scared at first but then they got to know us and when they don’t have friends to play with at snack/lunch, they go up to 5/6s to play.” said Zayan.

Students were able to improve in socialising, make new friends as well as help the younger generation.

BUDDIES

This term the 5/6s in Coral have developed a partnership with the Foundation students in Diamond through our buddies program. So far the students have gotten to know each other by drawing pictures and writing sentences about their holidays. Students also worked on their Numeracy and teamwork skills through making kites with each other.
