LEAP
The last 2 weeks saw our Year 10 LEAP students begin their 2nd semester at Chisholm College of TAFE beginning the Certificate II in Building and Construction course. The group of 10 students will continue attending Chisholm on Fridays for the remainder of the year which will contribute towards completing the 1st year of the Certificate.
The course is very hands on, offering practical lessons which will prepare them for the 2nd year of the course. So far the group have learned about measuring timber, squaring off, measuring angles in timber and how to cut out and make a join. The students are very engaged and are enjoying learning in an adult education environment. They are also learning team work, time management skills, independence, valuable communication skills, building resilience and learning what it is like to work on a building site. As part of this course, when the boys return after the semester break, they will sit for their White Card which is a compulsory card that allows them to work on building sites. Well done boys, and we wish them every success as they complete the course.

Year 10 Work Experience
It has been a positive start to Work Experience this week as all the Year 10s are out on a placement of their choice.
I am looking forward to seeing the students in action and hearing all their stories. This is a challenging time for some, especially those who have not experienced a part time job or who are very shy. I wish them all the best.
Year 12 - TIS Excursion to Deakin
Last week Year 12 students went to Deakin University for a Tertiary Information Session (TIS) to introduce them to the process of applying for further study in 2020. This process will start for them next term. Each student will meet with me individually to work on their applications for university, TAFE, private providers or pre apprenticeships. Special consideration, scholarships, auditions, pre selection kits and interviews are also dealt with – it makes for a busy term for the students. There are lots of workshops and lectures available during the holidays to assist their studies and application process and I am pleased to see some students have taken advantage of the opportunities distributed to them via the career newsletter and emails.
Year 9 VET Discovery Day
The Year 9s went to Chisholm TAFE last fortnight for their Vet Discovery Day where they were able to try two workshops in different industries or trades of their choice. The incessant rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of our wonderful students who made the most out of this opportunity. Hairdressing, Engineering and Hospitality were the most popular workshops. Hopefully this experience put the possibility of incorporating a VET (Vocational Education and Training) subject into their senior programme.
Semester Reflection
As we wind up the term, we can look at the many things that have happened over the past Semester to assist students in thinking about, investigating and understanding possible career paths. Next term we start the Subject Selection process where Year 9s will look at the selection of their Year 10 subjects as they head towards their senior studies. For Year 10s, however, it is a highly stressful time for them as they need to ensure they are picking the correct subjects to assist them with getting into the tertiary course they are wanting to study – for some, the stress is surrounding the fact that they don’t know what they want to do. Both are perfectly normal scenarios.
I encourage all students within the school to seek me out if they ever need to talk about their future direction no matter what age they are, or what time of year. It’s what I love doing.
