Foundation

Literacy

In Literacy, the Foundation students have been focusing on learning the letter names and phonemes of S-A-T-P-I-N-M-D. We have been practising writing these letters and saying their phonemes too. We have been working hard to decode our words and writing our phonemes into our Elkonin Boxes. Look how well the students are showing excellence by trying their best in our Literacy activities!

Numeracy

The Foundation students have been focusing on numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 in Numeracy. They have been exploring different ways to make these numbers as well as how to represent these numbers as numerals, collections and words including learning about different parts of a whole. We have been working hard practicing our skills, working both independently and in groups to solve these problems. It has been fantastic watching Foundation students verbalise new skills they have learnt!

The Geelong Advertiser visited today to take photos of Foundation students for their 'My First Year' Photo Series. These will be published in the paper at a later date!

Junior School News

Content Knowledge – This term we have been looking at fairy tales and fables.  Through this we have been reading a variety of texts which have similar storylines, so we can compare similarities in each story.  We have been studying the characters, settings, complications, series of events and resolutions.  Students have also been building on their vocabulary from unfamiliar words they have came across from the texts.

Text Construction – During writing time we have been working on sentence level strategies to help us write a detailed sentence.  We have been completing activities called expanded sentences, where students are given a kernel, (small sentence) and then have to add more detail by including question words such as who, when, what and why.  We have also looked at conjunction sentences where students are given a sentence stem and then need to complete the sentence with adding the conjunctions because, but or so to complete the sentence.

Numeracy – So far this term we have been working on our place value knowledge.  We have been learning that each digit in a number has a value and it is important for us to know that value (For example 26 has 2 tens and 6 ones.  We have been practicing our place value knowledge when we are counting by putting them into groups of 10 to help us work out the total of a large collections.  We have also used place value when we are measuring to guess how many 10s and 1s are in a number.

Last week, middle school students have been learning about different events that are celebrated around the world such as Diwali, Bastille Day and Ramadan.

This week they are learning about Indigenous Australian History by reading timelines, Dreamtime stories and information on Indigenous Australian land management practices.

In Text Construction, students are learning how to write engaging narratives which include an orientation, a complication and a resolution.

Numeracy

In numeracy, students continue to develop their understanding of numbers with a range of place value activities. They are learning to read, write, order, expand and rename numbers of increasing value.

Senior School News

Fractions and Decimals

Over the last few weeks in maths, students in Senior School have been focusing on fractions and decimal fractions. We have investigated the connection between place value, fractions and decimal fractions and even extended that link into some real life measuring! With our school Athletics coming up, what a great opportunity to combine our new understanding of decimals and fractions  with long jump and triple jump. Students have spent the past week estimating jumps, measuring lengths, recording data, using the four operations to compare, order and problem solve our measurements too! Have a look at some of the action shots below.
