Mathematics in 1A and 1B

Over the last few weeks, the Year One students have been revisiting Addition and Subtraction. Both 1A and 1B have been learning different strategies for solving addition and subtraction equations like using number lines and counting-on. The students have been doing really well in these areas!

In week 5, we worked on shapes both 2D and 3D identifying different shapes within our environment and creating shapes out of 3D nets. Each student created a 3D shape and have taken photos to be shared within their portfolios at the end of the semester.

Here is some of our work pictured below!

Over weeks 7 and 8, we have been exploring chance and the language surrounding event likelihood. The students have enjoyed labelling situations and gathering data from one another to display in graphic organisers. The students have engaged in this learning really well and their attention to detail in their presentation shows this!

Harmony Day

On Tuesday 21st March 2023, Upwey South Primary School celebrated Harmony Week. Students were encouraged to come to school in the colours/attire of a country in which they have a personal interest or cultural link. Some students came dressed in country colours, flag colours or traditional cultural attire. Some students choose to come to school wearing a splash of orange, which is the official colour of Harmony Week. Students were also encouraged to bring to school an artefact/flag/interesting fact/photos/etc from their country of interest.

Take Home Readers

Commencing in week 3, all Year One students will be given their 'Home Reading Diary' for Term One. Each week, your child will be provided with one hard copy reader to read for the week. We ask that the book is read 2-3 times per week and is logged into your child’s reading diary.

If you would like to read an extra book for the week, your child may login to the MultiLit eLibrary using an electronic device. The eLibrary uses a browser-based platform, so books can be read on desktop computers or mobile devices (including smartphones and tablets). You will find the link to this website and your child’s login details at the front of their reading diary. Alternatively, your child may choose to read a ‘good fit’ book of their choice instead.

Your child’s reading diary and book needs to be brought back to school every Friday morning to be checked and swapped over by your child’s classroom teacher. We kindly ask that all books are taken care of and returned in good condition every Friday.
