CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN

As we’ve entered the second term of the year, students across all year levels have been enjoying a range of excursions, camps, and field trips that have taken place over this opening week. These include the greatly successful Year 11 Central Australia tour, the Year 10 Geography camp, and the Year 8 Rogaining just to name a few. We are also approaching the annual Cross Country Carnival, which has been of great talk amongst students, particularly the Year 12 Cohort, as it is set to be our last.

However, it is important to note that this term will be one of the busiest and fast paced, especially for our VCE students. It is crucial that whilst we focus on performing well and delivering our best, we also take into consideration the importance of balancing our studies along with our general wellbeing and mental health. This, for many, could mean engaging in physical activity, spending time with family, hanging out with friends, or just simply disconnecting from social media networks and technological devices. For myself and my peers, I know that this helps us to keep up with our studies and thrive throughout the school year.

Therefore, I cannot stress enough the significance of balance in our day to day lives. We cannot expect ourselves to excel in what we do, without ensuring that we are capable of doing so first. As I have progressed in my learning at McKinnon, I have learnt one of the most valuable lessons yet: put yourself first. Do the things that you love, that bring you joy, regardless of what they are, and you will be happy.

I wish everyone the best of luck for the remainder of this term, and I cannot wait to see what it has to offer!

JUNIOR CAPTAIN

The beginning of the second term is always filled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Coming back from a well-deserved Easter break to see friends and get back into the swing of school, the East Campus is buzzing. I hope that if you are feeling any nerves or anxiety regarding starting school again, reach out to a teacher, parent or even some of your wonderful student leaders. I encourage everyone to try out some of the many lunchtime clubs the East Campus has on offer.

Of course, last week was a very important week as we celebrate ANZAC Day and remember all soldiers and workers from not just the McKinnon area but all Australian and New Zealanders that got shipped off across the world to fight for their country, many not returning home. And the families who said goodbye to Fathers, Sons and Husbands who never could imagine what they would be going through in the coming years.

On Monday 24 April, the school allowed us students at the East Campus to spend lunchtime out on the nearby Marlborough Reserve allowing a much needed grass area for students to spread out and enjoy their lunch.

I am very excited to see what I can bring to the McKinnon leadership team and am very grateful for this opportunity. I hope to bring my resilience to the school and encourage all McKinnon students to push themselves socially and academically.
