10ICT AIRTABLE

This term the students in 10ICT will be using an online, free database software called Airtable. We started using Airtable for 10ICT in 2020 when students were locked down and unable to access the school desktop computers but have found it to be easily accessible to students, so have kept it in the course. Many staff have also discovered the benefits of using Airtable with various tasks.

Limiting ourselves to the free version of the software still gives the students the experience of working with tables of Records and Fields, choosing appropriate data types, sending forms to collect and automatically record data, manipulating displays of the data in various ways as appropriate and linking tables (the major advantage of using a database over a flat file) to reduce data redundancy.

Students will be creating their own databases on Hollywood Actors, their ICT class and current exam timetables as well as using and manipulating some pre-prepared databases on Seasonal Produce in Australia, and Famous People’s Favourite Books.

One of the greatest benefits, of course, is that, along with our use of Stile to present content, activities and assessments, this work can be completed on the Chromebooks at home and will not require students to access the desktop computers at lunchtime. It also allows for students who miss classes due to camps, excursions, sport, holidays etc to be able to catch up without having to give up many lunchtimes.

Hopefully the students will learn to appreciate the advantages of maintaining certain data in a database rather than just a spreadsheet file, and the experience should help to prepare them for using other databases such Microsoft Access if they choose to study an IT offering at VCE level.

GROK ACADEMY - WEB COMP MAY 2023 IS UPON US

The next competition starts on Monday 8 May 2023. This has been communicated via the newsfeed already but this gives a little more information.

Do you want to learn how to write web pages in HTML and CSS while you compete with students from around the world? If you do this is the competition for you! Web Comp May 2023 has two strands:

Web.Comp (Beginners) is designed for students with NO prior experience of web development and covers everything necessary to get started building real websites.

Along the way we'll also cover many of the techniques behind good web design, so your sites are both easy to use and beautiful to look at.

Web Comp (Intermediate) is designed for you to learn how to write and design User Interfaces (UI) in HTML and CSS while you compete with students from around the world!

Web.Comp (Intermediate) is designed for students with SOME prior web design experience and assumes you've already completed Web.Comp (Beginners) or our HTML/CSS Starter and Beginners courses.

Learn the principles of good web UI design to make your sites accessible, easy to use and beautiful to look at while also picking up some new HTML/CSS skills.

The Tournament starts on Monday 5 June. This is designed for students who complete the Web.Comp Beginner or Intermediate. The aim is to test your web design skills in HTML and CSS against students from all around the world!

If you have prior HTML/CSS knowledge, like from a previous Web.Comp or from the Grok HTML/CSS courses, this is the perfect place to show just how much you've learnt.

You will design a website to be voted on amongst hundreds of others and see who comes out on top. Voting is open to everyone, so you can get your friends and family involved! This is the crucial part when you complete the Tournament, when you finish, you will send your family, friends and friends of friends to vote for your website.

If you are interested in the Web.Comp Beginner or Intermediate, please email Ms Ho by Friday 5 May or come to A4 on Thursday 4 May at lunchtime to register.

Please only apply if you are interested and have the intention to see the course through - dedication and determination!

Let the competition begin and May the Fourth be with You!
