FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Sustainability consists of fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations. Are you aware that over 14 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean every year? Also, plastic makes up 80 percent of all debris found from surface waters to deep sea sediments.

Every person has a duty to try and reduce their impact on the environment and by doing simple things such as bringing your lunch in a reusable container. In Australia, during 2022 there were over 4 million students enrolled in schools. If each of these students was to bring their school lunch wrapped in soft plastic every day we would be contributing over 20 million pieces of plastic into waste each week.

Conversely, as we have gained more knowledge about waste, if each student was to reduce their use of soft plastic, even just one day per week, this would avoid 208 million pieces of plastic going to waste per year. Now, this is simply talking about school students, in Australia, and their lunch habits. Think about this on a global scale.

Now, take some time to consider yourself personally and how many opportunities you have to avoid plastics going to waste. As discussed before, the simple and highly achievable task of bringing in your school lunch in a reusable container may seem insignificant for the individual but could have an enormous impact when considering the global economies of scale.

Please ensure that you bring a reusable container to all Food Technology practical lessons.
