Learning Community 1

Prep Guy

We have had two very busy weeks learning and having so much fun together! On Monday the 14th we were lucky to join in with the Great Mates Incursion where we learnt how to make friends and how to be a good friend. On the 15th we joined in with a Soccer Clinic on the Oval. I think we may have some budding soccer players in Prep Guy! What great skills! We were very lucky to have Jo from Bunnings East visit our classroom on the 16th. Bunnings donated shovels, gloves, soil and Winter vegies for the Preppies to plant out. We will need to think of yummy recipes to cook with our newly planted crops. On Friday the 17th we had a St Patrick's Day feel in the classroom reading how to catch a leprechaun and making our very own leprechaun catcher! I wonder if anyone caught one over the weekend! In Reading we continued to make our way through the alphabet, learning the most common sound made by letters. We are learning to form these letters correctly and put letters together to make words. In Maths we are working on numbers to 10, reading, writing, counting and showing these numbers in many different ways.

This week in our room we celebrated Harmony Day on Monday, reinforcing that we are all different and what an awesome thing this is. Imagine if we were all the same. How boring! On Friday the Teachers completed a Professional Development day learning about Safe Minds, ensuring we can assist anyone who may be feeling down and out. We continued learning about the letters of the alphabet, reading and writing with these letters and finding rhyming words in our classroom. We continued learning all about numbers to 10, counting forwards, backwards, finding missing numbers and reviewing written words to match numerals to 10.

Students of the Week

Last week our Student Of The Week was Hunter T. Hunter received this award for trying extra hard with his learning tasks and never giving up. Well done Resilient Hunter.

This week's Student Of The Week is Steven. Steven was chosen as this weeks student achiever for taking responsibility for his own learning. Steven continued to try hard blocking out distractions, even when the learning tasks seemed difficult. Great job, Resilient, Responsible Steven.

We have had lots of fun during the last couple of weeks in Grade 1 and 2. We had a Great Mates Incursion with a kind, insightful and caring man Tim and students found this engaging, exciting, informative and at times, absolutely hilarious. Tim was also quite the magician and all students were amazed by his magic tricks! We explored concepts surrounding resilience, empathy and respect whilst exploring friendships and what it means to be a good friend.

In reading, we have continued exploring comprehension strategies. Whilst exploring fiction stories or books, we have been using different skills to question and summarise what we have read or what we will read.

In writing, we have continued learning about adjectives and how we can use describing words to help us lengthen and improve our writing. Students have also been learning about similes and this has also supported students to explore how they can lengthen their writing and add more detail for the reader.

In maths, we have continued developing our knowledge of whole numbers, particularly surrounding using number lines and skip counting. We have continued our exploration of 2-Dimensional shapes and have begun exploring 3-Dimensional shapes.

We have had the opportunity to engage in a Soccer Clinic and one Football Clinic, with another footy clinic occurring next week.

The next two weeks will involve more learning, sports and of course, lots of fun!

We are so excited for our upcoming Athletics Day and are looking forward to heading into and ending Term 1 on a high note!
