Food Garden

VCAL work on the MBSC Food Garden 2022

For the past 6-7 weeks the VCAL class have been planning and constructing a selection of above-ground garden beds for the use of the school. During term three we went on an excursion to Yackandandah to visit their community vegetable garden to take inspiration and ideas from their layout and put it into a digital plan made on Gardena Garden planner.

After getting the go ahead by the principal we had to create an itemised list of what tools and materials were need and what the cost of it all would approximately be. All materials were purchased in late term 3 and arrived during the school holidays. As soon as term 4 started we all got to work planning, measuring out the dimensions of the garden, digging out paths and trenches and preparing material to be cut and fixed together.

By week 3 of this term VCAL had dug up and turned up all soil inside the garden area, installed treated log posts, dug a path to connect all garden beds, fixed all corrugated iron sheets to the posts and reinforced the structure with recycled wood used for cross bracing the garden bed together.

We still have plenty of work to do before the garden is complete, but this just means that there will be lots of work for next year’s class to complete. The reason for this garden being built is to give back to the school community so that classes such as cooking can use ingredients grown from the school garden to cook meals that are locally grown. Its also made so that there is a space for people who are interested in gardening and green thumb activities.
