Week 4 - Active Learning
At O’Connor Catholic College, students engage in active learning which is where students participate or interact with the learning process, as opposed to passively taking in the information. When given the opportunity to actively engage with the information they’re learning, students can perform better. Through the process of co-constructing learning intentions and success criteria, the objectives of the learning become more transparent to students and the time in class is more focused on achieving specific goals. This kind of learning nurtures the brain, giving it an extended opportunity to connect new and old information, correct previous misconceptions, and reconsider existing thoughts or opinions.
Active learning is discussion, practice, review or application and is a deliberate engagement with the teacher in order to move their learning forward. Students engage in learning conversations every lesson, being provided with feedback in order to improve their skills and application. Active learning is participating in these discussions and being able to articulate their own understanding of how their learning is progressing.
