Religious Education News

Andrew May  -  Religious Education Coordinator

One of the most significant stories retold in Mark's Gospel is when Jesus gives new life to the daughter of a Synagogue official named Jarius. He pleads with Jesus to come and save his daughter, even when told by all present not to bother Jesus. Impressed by Jarius' faith, Jesus accompanies him to his home where he sees the girl laying dead on a stretcher. Jesus tells her to get up, which she immediately does.

This story has special meaning for us at a number of levels. Firstly, Jarius was not put off by the laughter and disbelief of those around him, who thought that Jesus' time was far too precious to be spent on a seemingly futile task. He showed persistence and faith, and above all, love for his child. Finally, when Jesus told the child to get up, she did so immediately, being healed in body and mind, and showed no ill-effects.

All too often we see the effects of mockery and disbelief on those around us. It can be a very destructive force. Like Jarius, we should not listen to those who seek to tear us down, but rather listen with faith filled ears and continue to ask God to help us in our lives. The resurrection of Jarius' daughter is a clear message to us that when we show faith, determination and persistence, we can achieve great things.

Our HSC students are a living representation of the message of Jarius and his daughter. They have shown grit, determination and worked hard through difficult times to overcome many challenges. They have now come to the end of their life here at O'Connor and as they set off into the next phase of their lives, we pray that they too will have the faith of Jarius and never cease asking God for help in their lives.

Keeping in touch with what is happening in the Cathedral Parish is easy through their website and Facebook pages.

With such a difficult year and a half it has been harder for parishioner's to give to the parish through the plates, particularly when the church is closed as it is at present. The Parish account details are available on the Parish bulletin.
