Exams

A range of our senior school students are currently completing their exams, with our junior school students starting in a few weeks.

This year we have made significant changes to the exam process for our junior students. This has occurred as we went right back to the purpose of end of semester exams for both students and staff. We discussed that this purpose is to:

  1. Prepare students for study/revision practices that are needed in later years education and training.
  2. Ensure that assessment is consistent between classes in regards to rigour.
  3. Facilitate effective feedback practices, at the class and individual student level.

Although we determined that our previous process facilitated the second point above, we believe it did not meet our need for point one and three.

To meet this need, we have:

  1. Modified the quantity of exams in Junior school.

Students in subjects not completing an end of Semester exam will have a substituted Learning Task, that is more relevant to the learning experience in that subject area. It's important that these are still consistent across the year level and have suitable rigor for students to demonstrate their learning.

Junior students also need adequate time to revise for exams, and previously having too many exams in a week has hindered this.

  1. Timeline to facilitate individual and class feedback.

Junior exams are happening a week earlier than previous years, as we look to provide suitable time for quality feedback for our students and, importantly, a opportunity for them to learn from this feedback.
