SAKG NEWS

Last week saw the return of Lyn to the kitchen after a period of carers leave. It’s great to have her back buzzing around but we are also grateful to have had Kate hold the fort and allow the kitchen program to keep running in Lyn’s absence.  For this fortnight rotation students will be cooking broad bean falafel fritters with mint yoghurt, Greek mini crustless quiches, herb and cheese pizza, and basic waffles.  Many of these dishes are using produce from the garden and will be thoroughly enjoyed.

In the garden, students will be finishing off the final bits of harvesting, which include broad beans and garlic, and commence the planting our summer crops.  Going into our well-prepared garden beds are pumpkins, tomatoes, zucchinis, capsicums, corn and herbs.  In addition to these, thanks to Grandma Micky (Charlotte of Prep B Grandma), we have some giant pumpkins planted.  These won’t be for eating, they are more of a decoration and to admire.  Instead of “Jack and the giant Beanstalk” we could have “Petunia and the giant Pumpkin”.  Students from the higher grades have been busily netting the fruit trees to save the fruit from being pecked and eaten by the birds.  And thanks to the hard work of the preps the garden was well watered after the warm weather at the end of last week.  It is great so have the younger grades explore the garden giving them a taste of what’s to come.

Over the past couple of weeks it has been really notable to have more volunteers in both the kitchen and garden.  We are always looking for help in so many capacities (weeding, watering, running small group activities, overseeing a small group in the kitchen etc…) and at any time (before and after school, during classes …) so if you wish to helpout please see one of the SAKG team or the ladies in the front office and we can set it up.  All you need is a current WWC check which is free and easy to obtain.  Having the extra helping hands just makes the kitchen garden program run so much smoother.  We have also been very grateful to those students who are undertaking community service, who have done an amazing job with weeding around the garden beds.  A big thank you to Mr Senior who has led this.

At our last school assembly names of two students were drawn out and awarded a prize for their “DO GOOD FEEL GOOD” raffle. The winners were Deeva Kumar Singh of 4C and Molly Shepherd of 5/6.  This raffle will continue until the end of the year to acknowledge all those students who have either volunteered their time in the garden over recess or lunchtime or have been identified as a garden star during classes.

Heading home this week will be our annual Christmas raffle.  Dawn, one of our amazing volunteers, has kindly made and donated a beautiful Christmas cake.  It along with it some other prizes will be up for grabs.  Tickets are $1 each and the raffle will be drawn at our final school assembly.  If you want to win it you need to be in it, so jump on board and get your tickets.

Lastly, a reminder to look out for our community share trolley which is placed out in the yard near the 3-4 soccer pitch on a Tuesday and Thursday morning and occasionally after school.  It is stocked with a range of garden matter, from plants, flowers, seeds and produce.  Families are more than welcome to take something or alternatively donate to the community share trolley (particularly if you have excess of something at home which is garden related).
