Sheep’s gut makes for smelly strings but exquisite music

The Napier Club managed to secure a glorious evening sans precipitation on Friday and the Senior String Quartet provided a beautiful accompaniment to the garden gathering at Murndal Homestead. The overflowing Wannon, the mature exotic garden surrounded by river redgums, the stately home and the accompaniment of our Senior String Quartet, Nick Hoskyns, Anna and Millie Davidson and Ned Walker (OC 2022), provided a scene to remember; perhaps a scene reminiscent of earlier times when a string quartet may have accompanied gatherings at Murndal more frequently.

It was, however, the visit on Saturday from the renowned Australian Brandenburg Orchestra (ABO) that introduced our students to the ‘joys’ of playing period instruments.  Sheep’s gut strings make for an exquisite sound but also a smelly experience.  The student workshop was followed by a concert for the public which was very well attended and presented the ABO playing authentic Baroque instruments including the extraordinary Theorbo and Baroque flute.  A most enlightening afternoon.

Congratulations to Year 7 students for presenting a well-polished display of their learning in music this year with the Year 7 Instrumental Music Program Concert on Tuesday. The concert was ably introduced by Claudia Cochran (Trombone) and Finley Hiscock (Trombone), aided by representatives from each section.  The warm audience appreciated listening to the different sections and the ‘tutti’ Concert Band, even joining in with a rousing version of Jingle Bells.

On Tuesday 29 November at 6.30pm we urge you to take the opportunity to attend the Australian String Quartet. We are so pleased to welcome back the ASQ who will workshop with our students and plunge us deep into the world of the string quartet once again.

The Junior School Speech Day on Friday December 9th will showcase our Myrniong musicians as they celebrate their year on the Simons Auditorium.  Finally, we return to our advent home at St. Andrew’s on Monday 12 December at 7pm to welcome Christmas and the festive season.
