Year 2 Maths Talent Quest

Karen Chandler, Deputy Head of Junior School

The Year 2 students recently entered two class entries in the Maths Talent Quest. Each class decided on their own Maths inquiry:

  • Year 2S – Maths in games
  • Year 2L – Maths in Spaghetti for Everyone (picture storybook)

Entries were evaluated by judges at schools throughout Victoria, and it is with great excitement and pride that I announce that both Year 2 classes were awarded a high distinction!

This was a true team effort in exploring Maths concepts. Congratulations to our Year 2s for their efforts and participation.

Junior School Chess Club

Tania Whitehead, Talent Development & Enrichment

Coordinator

Congratulations to all students who participated in Chess Club throughout Term 3.

Held each Wednesday lunchtime, playing chess together was a fun way for our students to improve their cognitive and life skills. As studies show, being involved in playing chess can assist in developing your memory, critical thinking, analytical and strategic thinking, problem solving and planning skills.

Just as importantly, chess can help students improve their comprehension and social skills. It is a game that teaches you how to win graciously and not to give up when defeated.

On Wednesday, we celebrated the Chess Club Champions for Term 3. Well done to the following students:

  • 1st Place – Toby Kennedy
  • 2nd Place – Lawrence Li
  • 3rd Place – Luke Munnerley, Lucas Xu-Fei, Farees Huda-Rahman
  • Coaches Award for most improved player – Phoenix Catherina

Thank you to the Chess Coach, Boris, for his guidance.

Year 5s visit Scienceworks

Karen Chandler, Deputy Head of Junior School

Last week, Year 5 students visited Scienceworks. This excursion was an opportunity to reinforce the scientific understandings we have been exploring in our Year 5 Science classes.

Here are some reports from students about their experience.

Chelsey Li and Sophie Tesch, Year 5

This year, we have been learning about the Earth, space and light in our Year 5 Science classes. Earlier in the year, we researched a particular planet in groups, and created the solar system to scale. We also did experiments with light.

As a continuation of this learning, we recently had the opportunity to visit Scienceworks. First. we went into the Lightning room, where we saw people use magnets, metal, and friction to cause bolts of lightning to burst out of a metal stand.

Later on, some of us tested and measured our health. Others explored the world of digital science, and tested how digital devices could sense our motion.

Lastly, we visited the Planetarium. We watched a short movie on space, and then the guide talked us through a very realistic star constellation. Everybody learnt how to find 'South'. We also spotted a few popular constellation shapes. Year 5s had the best time ever!

Tom Lyng and Dante Difelice, Year 5

Year 5s recently went on a thrilling excursion to Scienceworks. This trip was not only highly educational, but also bucket-loads of fun!

The Lightning room was the first show, and it was something we will never forget. After that, we went to many cool places, including a futuristic build-your-own-car station and a sports museum. When that enthralling experience was over, we went to a large dome shaped building called The Planetarium.

Here, we watched a short movie about planets and saw which planets might be habitable. When that was finished, we watched a breathtaking show about constellations, which was as much fun as it was educational! We learnt about static electricity, planets, all the different types of constellations, and SO much more!

All in all, the Year 5s had a fun and educational excursion, and we would like to thank all the teachers and staff for their efforts in organising this awesome day for us!

Year 7 Maths Games Day

Akshayini Wadhwani, Year 7

Recently, two teams from Kilvington participated in the Maths Games Day at Strathcona Girls Grammar School. The team I was in consisted of Brianna Barnes, Grace Anastasiadis, Eva Rudik and myself. Each team was given a series of puzzles to complete.

We started the day off with ‘Ken Ken’ puzzles. After a recess break, we completed 20 difficult problem-solving questions. The event enriched my teamwork and problem-solving skills. My team and I really enjoyed this Math Games Day experience!

Cassie Yeo, Year 7

My team for Maths Games Day consisted of Kate Phillips, Sofia Karagounis, Georgia Thompson and myself. Throughout the day, we played many minigames.

We started the day off with a game called Honeycomb. This game is similar to another game called Dots and Boxes, though we had to use numbers that added up to get 30 instead of dots. The next game we played was Chase Zero. The aim of this game was to get to zero in the least amount of moves, using division, multiplication, and subtraction.

Another minigame was 31, where we had to cross off, add numbers and try to force the other player to go over 31. Our last game was the Runner game, where we had to work out a set of different problems, and then the runner would get a new set of questions.

My team and I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and we are very grateful to have been chosen for this opportunity!
