The Principal's Pen

In this final issue of the College newsletter for 2022 there are some great examples of the diverse activities that students are involved in at Cornerstone. I was interested to read a recent article about research that suggests school connectedness plays a big role in positive mental health. The quality of engagement that students have with their teachers and peers, having a school that is an enjoyable place to be and actively participating in school activities were identified as key aspects of that connectedness. There have been so many examples of each of these aspects this year, and I’m pleased that research is recognising the value of those things in our students’ wellbeing.

Next year is already promising more of the same. We are planning for the Sydney Canberra trip to be reinstated for Year 10 students next year. There is still planning to be done and information will be sent to parents directly, but that is an exciting development. There are other projects around the school in the pipeline so watch out for information as it comes out.

I am very pleased to be able to announce two new staff members for our Secondary school. Mrs Libby Dowell has been appointed as the Secondary Pastoral Care Coordinator for next year. Libby is well known in our College community and brings a wealth of teaching experience in the HASS learning area as well as a vision for student culture. Mr Gabre Nel has recently joined Cornerstone as a parent and will be joining Libby in Secondary leadership as the Secondary Curriculum Coordinator. Gabre has extensive experience in Secondary administration and curriculum development, and he has already been working with Mr Meyer, learning all about our systems and processes.

Next year promises to be an exciting one, with lots of new additions and inclusions, especially with all the new students joining us for the first time. I pray that all of our College families have a restful and enjoyable break and I look forward to welcoming everyone back in the new year.
