Hunting for Treasure in the Primary School
Last Week we went hunting for treasure for Book Week as this year’s theme was “Find Your Treasure”. This ensured that there was a lot of pirate-themed things in both the Primary and Secondary schools. From treasure chests packed with books and gold (chocolate of course) to maps and even a parrot.
In the primary and ELC they had a guessing competition and participated in many activities based on nominated books they rotated through, so they could experience them all.
On Friday there was the Book Week parade showcasing the creative costuming skills of students (and parents) which was enjoyed by all. They primary boys were also involved in a treasure hunt around the school organised by Mrs Emily Kenny. This saw them do some very fun things like walk the plank and avoid scurvy all while collecting riddles and clues.
In the Senior Library, there was the morning quiz where general knowledge and literary questions are given daily in the bulletin, correct answers are then collected and one lucky class from each House is rewarded with a bag of chocolates to share. This is always highly competitive, and it was great to see how many Home Groups participated this year. We even ran out of chocolate on the final day!
Next was the treasure hunt which was undertaken by Year 7 and 8 students. They were given seven clues and had to use their library knowledge to locate seven small bags of puzzle pieces in various locations in the library. They then had to put together all the puzzle pieces and answer a riddle to claim their group’s treasure. The boys tackled this with much enthusiasm and some fantastic team work. We always enjoy seeing them dash around the library from vertical file to graphic novels, non-fiction to magazines.
The annual guessing competition was another highlight of the week with many students in classes or at lunchtime and recess trying to guess the treasure based questions. Winners for this competition are to be drawn at the end of the week.
On Thursday the Library held its annual staff morning tea and there was a wonderful turnout to enjoy the goodies and either, participate in the guessing competition or just catch up for a chat with staff you might not get to see much of during the term.
Book Week also signals the end of the Premier’s Reading Challenge in the Primary with 7 September being the final date for Senior boys. This allows us time to enter all the information required to receive their certificates and medals in a few months’ time.
Overall it has been an enjoyably busy week with lots of chocolate consumed, some much needed fun and new experiences for everyone.
