WORKING BEE FOR SPRING FAIR

The first Spring Fair Working Bee is planned for Saturday, 7 September 9:00am - 2:00pm.

All families are encouraged to come along and help with readying the school grounds for Spring Fair.

Tasks include:

  • topping up the sandpits with new sand and tidying up the Prep garden,
  • painting a section of fence along Hoddle Street,
  • tidying up the theatre foyer and hanging of student artwork,
  • sweeping and picking up rubbish.

Stay for the whole day or just a few hours - every bit helps!

Morning tea and lunch will be provided. If you can't stay, please consider helping out by donating a cake or fresh fruit for morning tea.

We can only make this happen with your support, please consider offering your time to help make our 2019 Spring Fair a fabulous success for all of our community to enjoy!

With thanks,

2019 Spring Fair team

LOOKING AFTER OUR FRONT OVAL & EACH OTHER

Some of our Grade Four students have done a great job creating and displaying posters about how students in the primary school will be looking after the front oval and each other this term.

A student action team will be involved in making decisions about the front oval in Term Four and beyond. Hopefully our high school students will have the back oval back by then. Also it might not be quite so wet.

Ball games on the front oval

Students in Grades 1-4 may play ball games on the front oval on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Students in Grades 5-6 may play ball games on the front oval on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

High school students may play ball games on the front oval Monday-Thursday.

No ball games on the front oval on Fridays.

Students in Grades P-2 may play soccer on the asphalt at recess and lunch times Monday-Friday.

Students in Grades 3-6 may play basketball, down-ball, etc on the asphalt, but not AFL, rugby or soccer.

Gumboot days

On wet days a 'Gumboot day' will be called. Students will need to be wearing gumboots in order to play on the front oval. There will be no ball games on the front oval on gumboot days.

No tackling

Normal tackling is fine in soccer. No slide tackling or tackling from behind. Only touch tackling in AFL and rugby (like in tiggy). In ‘Markers up’ if no-one marks the ball, the first person that touches the ball after it has hit the ground takes possession.

Student referee

For primary students there will be a student referee. Referee may report 'Unsporting' behaviour to the relevant classroom teacher with the teacher deciding on the consequence.

What to do on a 'no ball games on the front oval' day?

Some of our Grade Six students who are keen soccer players have brainstormed some ideas for what to do on a 'no ball games on the front oval' day:

Yoga, stretching, warm-ups (cross-training for flexibility and injury prevention)

Squats, lunges, pull ups, push ups, climbing frame (cross-training for strength)

  • Run laps on the front oval perimeter track (cross-training for cardiovascular fitness)
  • Basketball

Down-ball

SCIENCE WEEK - DESTINATION 'THE MOON'

Last week we celebrated National Science week and 50 Years since the Moon landing.

The secondary maths and science team hosted the Science Afternoon on Thursday, 15 August. Both primary and secondary students and families got to enjoy many stations and activities exploring the maths and science of space.

Highlights included:

  • Year 9 students Matthew and Wil launching their water-powered rocket
  • Many students successfully designing and engineering parachutes that stopped water balloons exploding.
  • Students defying gravity and calculating the flight path of rockets.

A massive shout out to all the Year 11 and 12 students that helped us translate keywords into the many languages represented by our school community. Thank you to teachers, students and families that came and enjoyed themselves. See you next year.

ARTWORK UNDER THE MEZZANINE

You will have noticed beautiful blue skies and trees under the mezzanine by our very creative teacher, Olga. Please keep watch as more artwork created by students is added in the months ahead.

Some brown-purple colour will be added to give  some further detail to the trees.

There are decorated DVD discs which each student has completed from the beginning of the year.

These are basically in the school house colours.

The aim is to complete the mural by the end of the year where we will have an opening.

There will be vinyl albums which will be placed on spikes to emulate flowers .

They will be placed into the existing two main garden beds in amongst the existing plants.

THE GREAT BOOK SWAP 2019

Collingwood College Library  hosted the Great Book Swap on Wednesday and Thursday this week to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) vision to lift literacy levels and instil a lifelong love of reading in students in remote communities.

Thank you to those families who donated books and to those who bought books with their gold coin donations on the day.
