Interschool AFL

MGC participated in the Inner North Division carnival for Year 9 and 10 Australian Rules Football. The strength of the local footy clubs was evident as we were the only school that managed to fill two teams.

With the Year 9 players winning the State Grand final as Year 8’s last year, we were always going to field a very strong A team. As the results show below, all 4 matches seemed quite easy. The challenge that I set to the students was playing them in all different positions throughout the day which made the games a little closer than expected, but it means we have the better chance of selecting the strongest team possible in the Regional Finals next term.

Our second team was filled mainly with students who do not play competitive AFL outside of school and they found all games very challenging and were unable to register a win. Having said that, they competed with energy and passion even though their opposition teams were A teams.

Thanks to Julia Kefford who helped coach the B team. Having played AFL herself as a student, her energy and encouragement helped the team enjoy the day and learn a lot about the great game.

Inter School Cross Country

On wednesday the 22nd of May 27 MGC students took place in the District Cross country. It’s safe to say the MGC was a strong competitor against the other schools.

Our first race of the day was the u/13 girls. After their pre-race pep talk by yours truly, they all lined up at the start, the fog horn went off and they were racing. Before you knew it Heidi Cannell was leading the girls back in to the finish line. The u/14, 15 and 16 girls followed behind all doing amazingly well.

A total of 24 MGC students placed in the top 20 of their age group and are through to the zone level, which will be held on the 19th of June. Along with the 10 u/21 competitors.

Congratulations to all the girls who competed!

Interschool Sport Report

Training and tryout sessions have begun and will continue for Year 7 and 8 teams for Soccer, Badminton and Netball. All sessions begin at 1:20pm after students and teachers have had their lunch. A reminder that all indoor sessions require runners. The black soled school shoes are not permitted.

If any student missed out on signing up, they will need to contact the teacher in charge directly via email or at one of the training sessions.

A quieter fortnight on the Inter School Sporting calendar saw only the two events take place since the last edition of the newsletter: Division Cross Country Carnival and Division Carnival for Year 9/10 AFL. An article about each of these events can be found on the following pages in the newsletter.

A reminder to parents, if your daughter has a sporting achievement that you want to share with the wider school community, feel free to email the details through to me and I can place them into the newsletter. Some examples could be: an achievement in a non-traditional sport such as cycling, fencing, snow sports or selection into any sort of State/National/Under age representative teams.
