Myall Creek Excursion 2018

Myall Creek is known as one of the most important and tragic massacres in Australian history. On June 10th, 1838, 27 (approximately) Aboriginal women and children were senselessly murdered. They were innocent and defenseless. As Aunty Noelene Briggs stated: "It is important that this event is acknowledged today and remembered."

On August 1st, 2018, our Year 8 students participated in a site specific excursion and walked the track at Myall Creek where the massacre occurred. The students listened respectfully and intently to Aunty Noelene as she told the events of the massacre. The students learnt the details of this event which left a memorable impact on them.

We are thankful for the wealth of knowledge which Aunty Noelene so generously shares with our students and the time she gives up to help our youth understand our Aboriginal history.

Thank you to Deanne Battistuzzi, Shirley Johnson and Helen O’Neill for accompanying Year 8 on this day.

NERAM 2018 Let’s Hang It!

This year Olivia Mihill has been successful in the Junior Division with her artwork ‘Toil and Trouble’. Olivia was among a group of 66 finalists (approximately 15 in each of the 4 age divisions) in the 2018 University of New England School Acquisitive Art Prize. There were 530 entries this year. The selection committee commented that there was a wonderful diversity of art media and subject matter represented.

The artworks were on display from 27th July to 12th August in the 2018 Let’s Hang It! The exhibition opening and prize giving ceremony was held at 6 pm on Friday 27th July, 2018, at NERAM in Kentucky St, Armidale. Olivia received a certificate of Distinction for her artwork. This is Olivia's second time entering the competition and we wish her the best for next year's competition.

Swamped with hands-on work - Year 10 Geography

Year 10 have begun their studies of Geography this year with the Environmental Change & Management unit. The specific focus of this work is on the functioning of wetlands, and how these environments can be best managed.

In celebration of National Science Week, pictured below is their introductory activity to human-driven environmental change, demonstrating the effects of activities such as deforestation on local ecosystems.

As they approach the end of this term, Year 10 will further develop their geographical skills with a fieldwork excursion to Gwydir Wetlands. Details for this excursion are currently being finalised, and will be made available to all parents and students as soon as possible.
