FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS?
Sporting Days – I loved being able to compete for the school in a range of different activities from tennis and soccer to athletics and badminton.
Sweethearts – being involved in the music programs at Matthew Flinders provided me with many opportunities to develop my singing and overall musicianship. It is the reason I am now a professional singer, as well as a music teacher.
Overseas trips – I was lucky enough to go on two overseas trips during my school years. Reunion Island in year 9 was an incredible adventure; being able to dive right into the amazing culture, while using our French speaking skills, was an amazing way to learn. The Sweethearts 2007 Europe Trip was a once in a lifetime experience, and certainly opened up my eyes to what possibilities are out there in the music industry. It inspired me greatly!
WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY?
I had many teachers that I really connected with and was inspired by. Gayle Burrill was my music and singing teacher and showed me many skills in singing that have helped shape my ability today. Gayle also introduced to me to a group called The Celtic Women which changed my passion and direction in music. Folk and Celtic music were always a big part of my life, but being able to learn how to sing in this genre was inspirational to me.
WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW?
I completed a Master of Music Performance (Singing) in 2017, as well as a Master of Teaching (Secondary). I am now teaching at local schools around Geelong as well as performing and song-writing. I teach at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College, Kardinia International College, Ave Maria College and Geelong Grammar School. During the warmer months, I perform at many weddings and wineries around the region, and I am releasing a new single in November.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE?
I get to teach music and singing, and they are both things that I love. Being able to share my passion and knowledge with young students is a wonderful thing because I know what it is like to be inspired by a teacher or musician. Around my work I am able to be creative and write my own music, continuing to push my original music to find opportunities on TV commercials and advertisements.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS?
The best piece of advice I have for current students is to make sure you choose subjects at school that you are good at and that you enjoy! I did this in year 12 and it made my experience in VCE a lot of fun and very rewarding. Finding something that you are passionate about and that you believe in is the most important thing.
