Faculty of Engineering Co-Operative Program.

The Monash Engineering Co-operative Education Program (Co-op) is designed to equip students with up-to-date, relevant industry experience, and prepare them to become engineers of the future.  The program offers the flexibility for students to engage for a three or six-month term, and undertake meaningful work-based learning; explore different industry sectors, understand what it is to be a working engineer, and connect their experience to their studies in a more practical way. Students will also gain valuable professional development, culture sharing and personal growth from participating in the experience.

Students are encouraged to browse how it works to learn more about the benefits of participating in this program, one of which being that it is a paid industry experience. This program is available to students who are already at university, but VCE students are encouraged to give this program serious consideration when planning tertiary study. Browse Monash Engineering Co-operative Education Program (Co-op)

Chaplain's Corner

FATHER GEORGE ADAMAKIS

School Chaplain

With devoutness and joy, our students commenced their academic year with The Blessing of the Waters. The service was presided by His Grace Bishop Iakovos of Miletoupolis and assisted by our School Chaplain, Father George Adamakis and Father John Demertzidis and parent of our School Father Jean Mawal.

At the conclusion of the service, His Grace greeted the students and conveyed the love and prayers of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos and His Grace Bishop Ezekiel. Reminding our students and staff of the importance of God in our lives quoting the Ancient Greek saying Ἁπὀ Θεού δέι ἀρκσεσθαι – Begin all things from God, with God. His Grace highlighted the importance of formation in not only academic pursuits but also spiritually.  May we all have a Blessed New School Year!

The Journey to Pascha (Easter)

Great Lent as a Pilgrimage

Two periods in the Orthodox liturgical year are most significant, 1) Great Lent and 2) the period from Parscha (Easter) to Pentecost. Great Lent is a symbol of our life on Earth. The period from Pascha to Pentecost is a symbol of our life in heaven. The former period is a time of preparation, a pilgrimage, a spiritual ascent, leading to the glory of Easter. The latter period is a time of joy and thanksgiving, an image of the unending celebration in God’s eternal kingdom.

These two periods each have their own liturgical books, the Triodion and the Pentecostarion. These books contain the richest treasures of the Orthodox hymnology- literally hundreds upon hundreds of hymns and prayers are developed especially from the Gospel readings and arranged according to various themes such as repentance, forgiveness, fasting, prayer, renewal, and joy.

The 10 week period of the Triodion commences with the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee and ends with Saturday of Holy Week. Thus, in addition to the 40 days of Lents (six weeks), it includes three pre-Lenten weeks and Holy Week up to Saturday. The four pre-Lenten Sundays are known as: The Sunday of Publican and Pharisee (17 Feb) , 2) The Sunday of the Prodigal Son, (24th Feb) 3) The Sunday of Last Judgment (Meatfare) (3rd March) and 4) Sunday of Forgiveness (Cheesefare) (10th March).

Fasting, that is “eating sparingly and abstaining from certain foods” begins gradually during pre-Lenten season. This week of the Publican and Pharisee is fast free. During the week after Sunday of the Prodigal Son only regular fasting Wednesday and Friday is prescribed. Sunday of the Last Judgement (Meatfare) is the last day on which meat is permitted. Then fish, eggs, and milk products may be eaten through the Sunday of Forgiveness (Cheesefare). On the next day (11th March) Clean or Pure Monday (Kathara Deftera) Lent begins, a period of strict fasting. However, physical fasting from food is only one aspect of Lent. It should not excessively dominate our thinking. It is worthless without spiritual fasting from evil. Spiritual fasting is breaking with sin through repentance and the practice of positive disciplines such as prayer, daily reading of the Bible, regular worship, and frequent Holy Communion- leading to spiritual renewal. May we all have a blessed spiritual journey in Lent. Kali Sarakosti! Καλή Σαρακοστή!
