Debating & Public Speaking

Congratulations
To the SBC Junior Debaters from Year 8 – ACC Divison 1 Champions for 2014 -
Max Vaughan, Aaron Gill, Joel Bright, Edward McGarry, John Mavorides and Nicholas Gale.
Monday 10th November witnessed the annual, junior ACC Debating Day, generously hosted by St Bernard’s College, Essendon. With high spirits and hopes, and good prospects of doing well, the St Bede’s College team settled in for a competitive day of debating. The Division 1 team won three debates from three on the day; beating Salesian College and De La Salle College in their rounds, and narrowly defeating De La Salle College by one point to win the title in the final. Best Speaker awards through the day were won by both Edward McGarry and Max Vaughan. Well done to all speakers – a solid and successful team effort.
Also along for a first experience in Division 2 ACC Debating were a new squad of Year 7 students –
Luke Howard, Kiran Pereira, Ronan Beaucasin, Aaron Arthur, Dillon Bullman and Myles O’Sullivan.
It was a courageous and credible effort to take the floor and speak in their first ACC competition with minimal experience preceding any of these boys. They won one debate from three and finished fifth out of six schools in Division 2. There is a much potential for future development in this group, and although they were suitably challenged on the day, there was an honest and credible effort to be proud of. Congratulations to Kiran Pereira for being awarded the Best Speaker in his debate. I look forward to working with you all next season.

Public Speaking
The year of public speaking at St Bede’s College ended on a winning note! On Monday 10th November, a keen team of four public speakers ventured to St Bernard’s College to compete in the ACC’s Junior Public Speaking Competition 2014. In this team were: Tom Pinnuck-Alonso (Year 8), Jack Langdon (Year 8), Daniel Passante (Year 7) and Tom Skehan (Year 7). Cheering them on were a group of supportive, keen public speaking friends from Year 7 and 8.
Our four students confidently presented two speeches each: the Year 8s presented two different four-minute prepared speeches on a topic of choice, and our Year 7s also presented two speeches each – one prepared and one 2-3 minute impromptu speech on a set topic.
After a very close awards ceremony, St Bede’s College were named overall Champions for the 2014 ACC Public Speaking with the best speaker for the day, Daniel Passante.
Congratulations to all four students involved – Tom S, Dan, Jack and Tom P-A. Adjudicators commented on how passionate and well-delivered their speeches were. It was a fantastic team effort to reach this achievement and they are all deserving winners!
