Mathematics

During Mathematics this term, we are very excited to be back with the students in the classroom. Because of the nature of term 3 being entirely Learning From Home, the decision was made as a year level to shift some of the topics we were originally planning to cover in term 3 to term 4 so that students could use hands-on concrete materials. Students will explore a wide range of concepts including those from the strands of Number and Algebra, Statistics and Probability and Measurement and Geometry. Students will be scaffolded to select, track and work towards SURF goals related to these concepts from our new draft SURF menus.

Mathematical concepts that will be explored this term includes:

  • Patterns and Algebra
  • Data Representation and Interpretation
  • Angles
  • Geometric Reasoning
  • Volume and Capacity

During Term 4 students also complete the Australian Maths Competition, moderated mathematics tasks and other mathematical assessment. Exploring different representations of data such as charts and graphs on household bills or in the newspaper is an excellent way to engage with students mathematically at home. Using household items such as buckets, glasses and measuring cups and reading recipes is an effective way to explore volume and capacity at home. Mathletics.com is also a fantastic resource that can be used to consolidate mathematical learning.
