Inquiry
During Inquiry this term, students will be exploring the central question: “How does sustainable energy influence the modern world and what are our ethical responsibilities?”
This will be explored alongside Global Goal 11 - ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities’.
To build a deeper knowledge of societies’ use of energy, learners in Year 6 have been exploring the many different forms of energy and how energy on Earth originates from the sun’s heat and light. We have had sensational learning around the ways energy can be continuously transferred or ‘trapped’ in the form of fossil fuels.
The conversation around utilising and developing technologies for renewable and non-renewable energy sources is equally stimulating and important; in Year 6, the global implications around how energy is responsibly used is being explored at both an individual and industrial level.
We have currently undertaken a household energy audit across the cohort and are analysing the results to determine which positive lifestyle choices we can each make to contribute to a sustainable community.
To support your child in this area of learning you may find the following tasks at home beneficial:
- • Explore and have conversations about the different types of common energy use e.g. petroleum and diesel fuel in vehicles, solar panels on your roof, the type of hot water heater your household employs
- • Keep up to date with global events by reading the newspaper and articles online, especially those linked to Global Goal 11.
- Share experiences/knowledge of how energy usage has changed culturally over time
