Grade 3- Learning About Biomechanics

The grade three classes have been participating in an inquiry into which body parts contribute to the force whilst throwing.

Many suggestions were made, including those predicting that it was just the elbow that allowed us to throw a long distance. Other students predicted that it was a number of body parts contributing to the force. Jack Kruse in 3P suggested that your hips, feet, wrists and biceps were involved all together and Phoenix Cramer in 3H had an excellent knowledge of anatomy terminology, such as the use of your triceps, phalanges and gluteal muscles. Students worked in groups of three to determine if their prediction regarding force was correct. Some students chose to throw sitting down to see if this impacted the length of their throw, whilst other students compared underarm and overarm throwing to see if this made a difference. After inquiring into their throwing, all students were able to add body parts that they felt contributed to the force of a throw, with all of them walking away knowing that there is a summation of force and a sequential movement from the hips through to the wrist.

Weet-bix Tryathlon

On Sunday 8 March, over 50 Murrumbeena students aged from 7 to 13 years competed in the “Weet-bix Tryathlon”. For many students it was their first time competing in such a big event.

The distances for the events were:

11-15 year olds - 150mt swim, 6km cycle and a 1km run

7-10 year olds - completed a 75mt swim, 3km cycle and a 500mt run.

The atmosphere at the event was amazing and it was good to see so many excited students participating.

Joel Selwood was the event ambassador and a few children managed to have a photo taken with him.

Congratulations to all students who competed in the Weet-bix Tryathlon, and for those who missed out on all of the fun, there is always next year!
